    Patterned my New Englander today

Thanks Paul, I"ll not waste my time with the 7 1/2s.

    Patterned my New Englander today

I have been using the brown paper bag thing with 2 wraps and no folded base for quite some time with good results on birds up to 25 yds. Just looking for a way to hold the pattern & still have good penetration out to 30 or maybe 35 yds. I will try the folded paper cup with 1 1/8oz later today...

    Patterned my New Englander today

I have a .010 press fit with the OSCs. I will try it again today with 3 OSCs over the powder. One and a quarter oz load would overfill the cup by way too much & I would think that would make it less effective. Cap

    Patterned my New Englander today

Just to simplify things I left out the other materials used. Here is the whole thing. -- 12 gauge SxS choked .021 & .028-- 77gr FF Goex, 2 over shot cards & 1 wonder wad in that order over the powder, AA type plastic wad with the seal & cusion removed, 1 1/8oz #6 hard shot & toped it all off...

    Patterned my New Englander today

I tried the AA type wad with the bottom half cut off a couple weeks ago in a 12g choked .021 for prairie birds in Montana next month. Wanted to tighten things up a bit. It tightened it up, made one neat 3/4" hole @ 25 yds. I didn't recover the "slug" but it must have fused the pedals together...

    Pedersoli shotgun 12 gauge

Interesting-- If that is the case, what would be the max choke you would attempt to fire a PRB out of? I would think the seal would be quite poor after the ball pased through the choke. I'm not convinced this could or should be done but I have an open mind.

    Pedersoli shotgun 12 gauge

What game are you hunting that you plan to use a PRB (patched round ball) on?

    Pedersoli shotgun 12 gauge

Kirrmeister, my 12g Pedersoli is choked at about .013 & .024 & does a good job on our mountain Blue Grouse w/ 63gr FF or equal measure of 777 and 1 1/8 oz of 6s. Make sure it is not choked if you use a round ball. Easy to have fixed if it is.

    What is you hunting plans?

WHERE THE HECK ARE ALL THE BIRD HUNTERS? For me it's Blue Grouse in the Rocky Mountains,Huns & sharptail on the open plains, Chucker on the ridge lines and Bobs in Nebraska. I might even throw in an ocasional Pheasant hunt here & there. cap

Firing A Cap Before Going Afield

The only time I can remember that I ever had a misfire was last fall hunting Blue Grouse. On that day I failed to snap the caps prior to loading.

    my first ml shotgun

Runner, Thanks for such an informative post. I've wondered about the use of 777 in a shotgun. It must be a lot faster burning powder than the black is, causing more gasses to escape. I'll try some 2F. If the black helps I'll work with the wads. Would it be advisable to ream the sharp edges if...

Woops, that should have said 46gr 777 (=63gr FF)

    my first ml shotgun

Runner, I cant get anyware near that with my Peder 12ga choked .008 & .013. Fifty plus rounds over the last couple days using 46gr (= 63gr FF) & 1 1/8 oz #6 with every combo of .030" NCs with & w/o wonderwads and the best I can come up with is about 24" at 25yds. I've got some .120"...

    my first ml shotgun

I had to take 1/4" off the comb (tapering to nothing at the butt),and about 3/16" off the left side at the point where my jaw bone touches the stock tapering nicely out into the rest of the stock. That got things to line up pretty well. I also took about 1/8" off the rt side just for looks...

    my first ml shotgun

Just wanted to jump in here & say that I've had a great time shooting my 12 ga Pedersoli (non Cabelas). Mine is choked .008 & .013. It is all that I ever use on Blue Grouse here in the Mountains. As w/ some of you I've done sxtensive stock work on mine to get things to line-up. My load for...

    Anybody waterfowl with ML's?

Cant help with waterfoul but I just got back from a high country Blue grouse hunt. My 12 bore IC & Mod slams em hard w/ 78g FF & an ounce of 6s on the right and 5s on the left. The season is finally here--next up--Huns & Sharptail. Anyone hunt Quail in Nebraska?

    upland birds

Here is a little trick I came up with while hunting upland birds to carry wonderwads. Use a needle and heavy thread (I use 6/0 fly tying thread). Tie a knot at one end and string 18 or 20 wads on the thread. Tie a loop at the other end to hang on a shirt button or whatever. To use, simply pull...
