    flint substitute

I'm not a historian, but i would think that the mountain men, pioneers were a smart lot and if they could afford a more reliable weapon per say, they would have scooped it up at first chance. I'm gonna open up a can of worms on this one, but let's be real... for the common man that never touched...

    Correct Flint Angle

I've diddled with the angle up/down. Goes BOOM either way. I prefer angle up, just because.

    Your favorite hunting bullet?

This is my last post on this subject. It's simple math... .530 rb at 224gr., .535 at 231gr vs 400-480gr. You do the math, which is gonna penetrate better, traditional or not. I prefer to kill my intended target right then and there. Not saying that a rb won't do the job, just there are better...

    Your favorite hunting bullet?

Thank you, i couldn't have said it better myself.

    Your favorite hunting bullet?

To add to the above post, i have harvested ALL three with .54 rb and maxi's. To be fair, caribou aren't all that tough, and a rb is more than enough. Moose and bear, to me, are on a different level. They're tough, and can take a good hunk of lead in stride. JMO. :v

    Your favorite hunting bullet?

I have been known to occasionally leave the confines of my Penn's Woods and stray across the border into Quebec to hunt moose, caribou, and bear. The bear in PA are no slouches either. You don't know if your going to encounter a 50 or 500 pounder. I hunted deer for 25 years with rb, I'm more...

    Your favorite hunting bullet?

I guess i've paved my path to hell because until i can find a rb that penetrates as well as my .54 cal 400 to 480 gr maxi's on large critters from any angle, i intend to keep on keepin' on. :v

    Cheap powder measures

Good idea. Have you tried any .444 or .45-70 brass? The wider rim on them would probably make your soldering a little easier.

    sight slot blank

Sorry for the earlier confusion, I could have been a little clearer. I should also clarify that Lyman only offers the 3/8" on their website. I'll have to give them a call.

    sight slot blank

No such luck. The only one they offer is 3/8". Go figure.

    sight slot blank

I am wondering if anyone knows where to purchase a slot blank for the euro cut on Lyman muzzle loaders? Thanks.

Am I the only one hording.....?

I've always collected soft lead, which seems very hard to get gratis anymore. BP availability has never been an issue in my area. If push came to shove, i guess i would have to blend my own.

Can you use bar stock Ferroceum

...and there's the Pennsylvania game laws and a bunch of guys looking for a better "rock" to skirt the rules. :shake: Enjoy, J.D. +1

Think I turned another one to the DARK side..

Not sure 'bout Ohio, but here in PA in my area people flocked to the inline season when first opened many years ago. If i were a betting man i would wager that only a very small percentage of them ever entertained the thoughts of a BP weapon before that. One could hardly blame them, it's the...

    Mortimer flintlock 12 ga. smoothbore

Fine looking piece. I would really like a SxS flinter, but i like the looks of those Mortimer's.

How do we get laws changed in Pennsylvania?

I wish you luck my friend. You have a very long hard road ahead of you. The PGC doesn't seem to take very kindly to those that pay the bills making suggestions.

Think I turned another one to the DARK side..

I don't want my last post to sound like i'm looking for an argument. I'm not. I don't believe it matters if your using a $500 or $1500 weapon, as long as your out there grinding rock against steel having fun. It's definitely a sickness for which there is no cure.

Think I turned another one to the DARK side..

I have two factory ugly ducklings i would put up against any custom any day of the week. They might not have drop dead gorgeous wood, but they'll stack the bullseye when i do my part. Works of art belong in museums. Workhorses belong in the field.

    Lyman Fiber Optics

My peeper's aren't what they once were. I appreciate anything that will ensure i get a clean kill EVERY time. I left the factory fibers on my Lyman Deer Stalker .54 and am glad i did. It's my workhorse, does everything i ask, and i can shoot a fist size group at 60 yards which is good enough for...

    Mortimer flintlock 12 ga. smoothbore

That had to be a great feeling taking that honker with the rock&steel.
