    Smoothbore Shot Loads

Thanks for the suggestion Spence. As for power, just looking for a load that will knock a grouse off a tree limb. I'll try the tin can first though.

    Smoothbore Shot Loads

Great idea! I didn't think of that. Since Northstar West had to close it removed the option to call to find out what max. loads for the Trade Pistol are.

    Smoothbore Shot Loads

Howdy Folks! I recently picked up a Northstar West flint .62 cal. Trade Pistol. My intent is to load it with shot, so I can tuck it in my belt during Fall hunting. That way I can bag small game or a grouse during deer season while I'm packing the flint rifle. What load would you use in it?

    Lyman GPR Flint: Fantasy Piece?

"So I think a HC flinter would be a rare thing" ...Whoa there, it's good to check the actual trade journals before jumping to conclusions. Actual ledgers to American Fur Co. show that the trappers preferred flint rifles until the mid-1830s (almost the end of the fur trade). An excellent book is...

    Powder can spouts

"Damned them plastic cans" - I heartily agree! I just use a small Ted Cash brass funnel that I keep in the shooting box for filling horns and such.

    Lyman GPR or Traditions...Penn?

I've owned a number of Lyman Great Plains rifles. They've all been outstanding production rifles. The pros are: walnut stock, deep cut rifling and finally good design of a classic "plains style" half-stock Hawken of the mid-1830s. Spend the extra dough. A few years down the road, you'll be glad...

Someone start a new tent thread please

Very well said sir. The debate on whether something could have existed during a certain time period vs was it common place will go on and on around the re-enactment campfire.

Someone start a new tent thread please

Another thumbs up for RK Lodges. I bought my first Wedge with a bell from them 25 years ago. I recently sent the same Wedge back to them after a family of mice made swiss cheese out of it over the winter. I personally didn't think it was salvageable, but they patched every hole for $100 bucks...

Someone start a new tent thread please

An equally interesting question is when did machine stitched tents show up? Stoves, stitching....we may end up on the slippery slope of HC. I for one don't want to give up my tiny antique Sears and Roebuck pot belly stove on next week's cold February Rondy in Oregon's High Desert.

    Rifle Wall Rack

After rounding the tip off with a file, I use these: http://www.tdcmfgstore.com/agora.cgi?cart_id=51875849.30297&p_id=GH&xm=on&ppinc=search2 I also hit them with a little cold blue to "age" them.

Muzzle loading Arms and Pioneer Craft Show

We'll say "Howdy" when we get there. I need to get some flints from Marilyn. Safe travels.

    Hornady Maxi ball load ?

For my home-cast Lyman "Plains" bullets, I took one of my short starters and filed the roundball indentation of the brass tip to a flat surface. I also did the same for a brass ramrod jag. It may not make a significant difference to some, but why cause unnecessary distortions to the flat surface...

    Lyman GPR Flint: Fantasy Piece?

Your memory served you well, the J.Henry "Scroll Guard" Trade Rifle was indeed a full stock rifle. First came out in 1834, as the successor to the J.Henry "English" version full stock flinter.

    Hornady Maxi ball load ?

I agree with Zonie. The "ultra-litigation cautious" Lyman book states that when using a 400 gr conical, 100 grs 2F or 80 grs 3F is the maximum load. My apologies.

    Hornady Maxi ball load ?

If you have the inclination to cast your own bullets, I've had good results with Lyman's 395 gr "Plains" bullet. Cast of pure lead, loading can be done with thumb pressure. I shoot it with a wonder wad on top of 90 grs 3F Geox.

    Sling for New Englander

If you're not "crafty" about making one yourself, you might consider buying one from October Country: http://www.octobercountry.com/universal-sling/ It's well made, and I've used one on my hunting rifle that I didn't want to drill sling studs into.

    Natural Patina

Post up a picture. I love honest old patina on a rifle. Most of us take years of carrying a rifle for that great look. Besides, I'd like to see any rifle from Idaho, beings it's my home state.

    Lyman Plains Rifle

It's a fine production rifle. You'll be happy with it. I still have my early Plains Rifle with it's huge brass patchbox. It was my first muzzleloader that my wife gave me as a wedding present back in 1982. I wouldn't trade it for all of my others combined. Killed my first blackpowder buck with...

Down to the wire PA hunt

Congrats on a great last minute hunt! Good pic, and fine looking flinter. Enjoy those backstraps.

    Lyman Great Plains Hunter

Assuming you want the Great Plains Hunter's fast twist for use with a conical bullet, I have had excellent groups using the home-cast Lyman 395 gr "Great Plains" bullet over a lubed wonder wad. Using 90 grs of 3F, I am getting one ragged hole dead on at 50 yards, and 2-3" groups that are 6" low...
