    This Old Knife

I'd say, you've got a great project on your hands. I need a few more hours in the day so I can take up the whole vintage knife hobby. Honestly, there's just something about the well-used blade that fascinates me. Personally, I'd replace the handles with something local, like myrtlewood in...

    swabbing for accuracy

I think I've seen you refer to all-day sessions (50+ shots) before, Roundball. My question, which goes for the original poster too, is this: are you using Pyrodex or Goex? Spit or Bore Butter Natural Lube on the patches? I agree that a properly patched ball is swabbing the bore as you go, and...

    Greetings from ORYGUN

Welcome from another left coast MLF'er. I can tell already that you are okay, because you can pronounce Orygun correctly. I'm out here in NE, where the elk grow big and the Salmon come to die. Where ya from? :v

    Round Balls with dents??

Great point, Roundball! You just increased my confidence in my PRB hunting setup by a whole lot. I planned on doing some similar penetration "experiments" this summer also. Thanks. :hatsoff:

    Cabelas Hawkins

Just got done cleaning my .54 after shooting about 50 rounds this afternoon. I'm still trying to decide between roundballs and maxi-balls for hunting this fall, but I was shooting about 1 1/2" groups (3 shots) at 100 yards with my elbow resting on the hood of my truck. The only issue I had...

CVA Stalker breech plug tang broken

So, I purchased a .54 CVA Stalker carbine recently and got a chance to take my son out shooting    with it and my reliable percussion guns. Before my first attempt at test firing it, I swabbed the barrel of the Stalker with bore butter, then a dry patch, then loaded the...

    CVA Stalker Carbine

I have the same question. What was recoil like with those loads? I just purchased a Stalker in synthetic, otherwise looks to be the same configuration as yours. I am still waiting for it to arrive, but am hoping I have the same kind of luck you did.

    loading block

Thanks for the photos, guys. I'm on my way to the shop.

    loading block

In the interest of helping me make a couple of these, would you guys post photos of different loading blocks you use? I don't know anyone who actually uses one. Then again, I only know about 4 people who shoot blackpowder, and I'm one of them. So, in deference to your expertise  , let's...

    which rear sight to use?

Thanks Rebel. I'm currently looking for a good peep, which may mean changing my front sight too.

    BEST POWDER CHOICE

May I ask what makes you choose FFG over FFFG (or vice versa)? I shoot percussions in .50 and .54. Should I be using 3F? So far, I've only used 2F Pyrodex. Not experienced enough to talk about inconsistency yet, but I have had a couple of misfires and a few long hangfires. I chalked it up...

    New Lyman GPR Question

I just got my new GPR too. I've noticed that the wedge pins are extremely tight -- tighter than I'm willing to force together. And, the instructions from Lyman in the box clearly say that only gentle pressure down on the barrel into the stock should be used. Otherwise, you risk cracking the...

    which rear sight to use?

Just so I'm clear, are you talking about a tang mounted peep? I would like to get one of those, but really have no place to look other than online. I still need to find out if a peep sight is legal in Orygun. I know that open sights with no fiber optic addition is the main thing.

    which rear sight to use?

Thanks for the opinions so far. I know that the area I hunt is brushy and forested, so I often find myself in very low-light conditions. Having never used a buckhorn, I'm wondering if it might afford me just a tiny bit more open view on a dark target.

How & When did you start in Muzzlelaoding, or Shooting Muzzloaders

Started last December in a cold snap of 0 degrees. I finally had all the "stuff" I needed to fire the Hawken I'd purchased in August. I did fire a ML back in about 1982 at a Boy Scout encampment. I am so green.

    which rear sight to use?

I just recieved my new Lyman GPR! But, its rear buckhorn sight was damaged in shipping. I've been sent a replacement already -- Lyman's flip-up adjustable rear sight. My question is for the hunters out there. Is there a better sight for hunting, or will it be my personal preference? FYI, I...

    T/C U-view powder flask

Thanks fellas. I know that loading from a flask or horn is frowned upon, and I thoroughly understand the risk. In my mind, it's not worth it. :nono: However, haven't 200 years of shooters done this as a rule? Actually, I'm just trying to get something a little less cumbersome that a whole...

Conicals & Rate of Twist in TC Hawken

I bought a can of Goex to try on my next outing. Hopefully, that will make me a better shooter. I'm looking forward to see the cleanup difference. I'm curious to know if there would/will be a difference in the results with the conicals or round balls?

    T/C U-view powder flask

Can anyone who actually owns/uses one of these please respond with some feedback as to how they work? Do they hold plenty of powder? Do they have a specific, measureable spout?

    Coal Oil??

I had an original rod from T/C do that very thing. Broke with very little pressure on it, but while "ramming" a patched ball down. Good thing I was watching the progress, because it broke diagonally with some weird grain and came very close to impaling my hand. :shocked2:
