    conicals...help!!

Are you shooting Lee REAL conicals, or some other type? Lee makes several different conical molds in .50 cal. Most Minie-type conicals are smaller than bore so they go down the barrel easily, but the REAL bullet has a band that is overbore so it can be quite difficult to load. In any case...

    Parlor pistols in canada.

Any pistol, flint, percussion, or centrefire is considered a restricted weapon under the Firearms Act. You must have the same licence to possess a percussion pistol as you would for any other. Oh yeah ... GO SENS !!!

    Would you buy it?

One USD is worth about $1.12 CDN, so it's not a function of exchange rate, but simply the asking price. A gun that sells for $900 in the US could be priced at over $1500 up here. I bought a Yugo Mauser for $399 locally that I have seen advertised for $150 in the USA. Guns that would barely...

    Would you buy it?

If it is a flintlock and you don't want to buy it, please send me a private message with the shop phone number and address. I will buy it. A lot of these guys in the USA don't realize that guns in general cost 2 or 3 times as much up here as they do down there, so $149 for almost ANY rifle in...

    Rib Removal Results

Thanks for the replies. I have been wanting to do some bench shooting for some time now, but I have yet to build a suitable bench and whenever I get out to my workshop to do the it I start thinking about shooting and then one thing leads to another and before I know it I am standing in my...

    Rib Removal Results

The guns' components are well-fitted I think. I had ascribed the large size of my original groups to poor aim or technique on my part. I have only been shooting rifles for about a year now. It was the huge change I noticed after taking the ribs off that got me asking questions.

Best wood for a gun carriage

I think elm and ash were very popular for carriage-building of all sorts back in the day.

    Rib Removal Results

Hello all. I noticed that the under-barrel ribs on my flinters were only held on with little screws so I took them off just for fun. Both rifles felt noticeably lighter and more swingable and felt much more balanced in my hands, particularly my Mortimer which is ordinarily very muzzle-heavy...

    Flintlock Necessities

One of those spring-loaded pan-chargers is really handy to have.

How do you clean flints between shots?

Whatever undershirt I am wearing at the time. In the winter I use a bit of patch material.

    leading flint

That's what I do too. I pound a ball (one I had to pull that now has a big hole in it) flat then cut out a rectangle of the appropriate size. I wind up using about 1/3 or maybe 1/2 of the flattened ball. I switched from leather to lead on my Mortimer rifle and I have noticed many more sparks...

    Canadian question

I beleive handguns were first regulated in Canada in 1934. I think full auto weapons were regulated at the same time. Although there is no place in this country that you may be in possession of a handgun outside of your home or an approved shooting range (unless you have a permit to transport...

    canadian shipping

Don't mark the package TOO accurately. DO NOT use the words "gun", "firearm", "rifle", "military", or any other red-flag word on your customs declaration form. Just put something vague like "flintlock", "reproduction antique", "machined goods" or the reliable, inscrutable catch-all "gift"...

    Pedersoli Mortimer

I love my Pedersoli .54 flinter. It is reliabe, accurate, and very nice to look at. I took the rib off the bottom of the barrel and it swings really nicely now. With the rib in place, it felt very front-heavy.

    pedersoli ignition

The breechplug on my Pedersoli is like a cross between the regular one shown and the Nock. It fits into the barrel and takes the vent liner like the Nock, but has a narrow cylindrical chamber like the regular one. I had to use a drill bit and a little file to remove burrs from around all the...

    pedersoli ignition

My Pedersoli has the same slotted vent liner and I had trouble removing it for the first time. Try immersing the breech end of the barrel in extra-hot water for a few minutes, then it should come out with just a screw-driver. This technique works on stubborn jar lids too.

    Roundballs in 1/28 twist?

I tried some Remington sabots in my 1:28 flinter and accuracy was horrible. They are very hard to load too. My home-cast Lee Improved Minies were a huge disappointment as well.

    Roundballs in 1/28 twist?

My A&H Mountain Rilfe has the same 1:28 twist and shoots round balls better than it shoots a lot of conicals. I use 60 grains of FFg behind a .490 with .017 unlubed patch and I get about 6" groups at 50 yards offhand.

    Canadian question

Game wardens and the like in Canada are usually provincial peace officers and generally they have the same powers as an ordinary policeman. Here in Ontario, they are allowed to enter your property and there is even talk of giving them sidearms so that if they run across an outdoor grow-op or...

    casting bullets

I just tried the fingernail test on one of my Minies and I was able to gouge it quite deeply. I then compared it with an R.E.A.L. that I cast from wheel-weights and I was not able to produce nearly as deep a groove with my nail.
