I like to sit with my .32, 30 min. or sow, get up and easy around. I was a mnt. cur hunter, but after 4 back surgerys it hard to keep up with dogs. I worked so i could hunt, but retired now. i dont do much of anything now. i bought 20 ac. out in the country so i could be in woods. Just feed wildlife now. I killed the grand slam of turkeys twice, i am proud of that, would like to kill world slam, but to broke up.
Laney, where abouts in Florida did you get your Osceolas?
And congratulations on that. And there's nothing wrong with feeding the wildlife I'm sure you get out there and watch them while they're feeding and that's a good thing.

BRADY RANCH, KILLED COUPLE OF HOGS THERE ALSO.

Just got some good news. The PT gal just left and I have officially graduated from "Wilson" my walker, to a cane. Maybe if this keeps improving I'll be able to get out and do some more testing with my Crockett soon. Just got some Swiss today as well so testing to be done.

However, as of now, I'm still under what I call house arrest. Can't leave the darn house.

So for you squirrel hunters, now that it’s getting later in the season and most of you have been out, how would you rate the squirrel population in your area this year.

Please list the state as well.
have plenty of tree rats in n.c. its just hard to find places to hunt because a lot of land is leased

Here in CT, it seems that the squirrel population is very low in some areas (SE CT in particular) and good in some of the northern parts of the state. Now that the leaves are gone, and deer season is over, I have been using my .36 flint lock by Kevin Blivens. I like to slow stalk the woods if I see a squirrel, otherwise, I will take a stand for 30 minutes at a time to see what is moving. I also combine my squirrel hunts with predator calling. Lately, I have had more luck on coyotes than squirrels.
good to see a dead yote.

House arrest beats being in the penitentiary my friend. Hopefully your progression keeps up and you'll be running them ridges before you know it.

Looks like the spring 20204 squirrel season for KY has been posted. This may be preliminary but best I can tell It runs from the 3rd Saturday in May (which should be the 18th) and ends the 3rd Friday in June (which should be the 21st).

So if this is correct, looks like we will have a little over a month for spring squirrel season.

If memory serves me correctly, last spring, which was the first time I have ever hunted squirrels during the spring, was some pretty tough hunting overall. It was fairly difficult to find squirrels at first but as more buds and leaves began to pop out, things improved. The first couple of weeks, by accident, I found squirrels were eating tulip maple leaves/flowers.

The last day of spring season was a real hoot. That's the first time I got into a bunch of squirrels chasing and mating. It was high action, to the degree that I have not seen since.

A fox squirrel is something that I rarely see in the wooded hills of KY. For the most part, they like to hang around in lower terrain in more of a field like environment, especially a corn field.

I have seen a few in the last couple of years down along the fields and road while driving into my happy hunting grounds. Interesting enough, I'm darn near positive I saw one that was crossed between a gray squirrel. He had the distinct trait of how fox squirrel carries their tail, was larger than most any gray squirrel I’ve ever seen and it was a mixed color of the two. I got a good look at him from just a few feet away as he hung on the side of a smaller tree on the edge of the very narrow road.

Also, a couple months ago I shot a squirrel that appeared to be a mix between the two. Not quite as predominant as the aforementioned, however. It was big for a gray squirrel and had a lot of red color on it, even the underside. Due to it being up in the top of a tree when I shot it, I was not able to see how it carried its tail, which is a direct indicator.

That was only about 400 to 500 yards from where I saw the other one that appeared to be a cross between a fox squirrel and a gray squirrel.

Yesterday while hunting I heard noises that resembled aggressive purring turkeys make. Here it was a string of squirrels chasing through the tree tops and up and down tree trunks. There were 4-5 of them. Never got a shot at them. It was interesting to see and hear.

That is indicative of mating season, eh?

From my understanding, the female will be in the lead with up to several males in hot pursuit.

I've also noticed there will be what I have previously called "satellite squirrels" hanging around but not partaking in the chase. They will remain relatively close to the chasing and will follow it around but not engage in the actual chase. Those are the ones I go after whenever I run across a mating chase session, as they are easier and somewhat more stationary targets. From my observations, you can just about count on them being males. There's more to the story but I digress for now.

BTW, Jim. How about posting that pic of the squirrels you got yesterday for others to see. It clearly shows the difference in color between the two.

I was gonna Ed but it has my 22 in it and that’s a no-no.
Understood. I should have remembered that. My apologies. I was hurting pretty bad last night when you sent that pic so forgot all about the squirrel tool being shown.

Here’s a couple pictures a customer of mine sent me. He knows I like squirrel hunting. He got divorced and bought a house in a development. This is what’s running around his neighborhood. I asked him if he wanted to sell his house. Lol

The last time I turkey hunted Georgia, I saw a jet black one with white nose and ears. My buddy took video of another one just like it. They were maybe a mile or two apart.

I don’t know how many times I’ve thought about taking a trip down there to hunt them. They were gorgeous!
