If this materializes I might contact you for some advice. The only squirrel dog I ever owned was a hound. He was a natural, no training needed.
I agree with what LANEY REECE says about squirrel dogs wholeheartedly, Ed. Bloodline. Example: This is my wife's dog, although calling it "her's" angers me because I have to take care of the d@nged thing mostly. It could be called a feist, I guess, but most call it a rat terrier. Supposed to be natural squirrelers - HAH. Stupidest dog I have ever seen in my whole life. Will not come when called, and will try to bite me sometimes. Let loose off the leash it will run straight down to the middle of high traffic road and stand and sniff the pavement just waiting to get clobbered. Wont bark at strangers at the door, wont run after, or even acknowledge, squirrels when I take it to the woods, and - get this - it's scared of rabbits. When that thing passes I'm going to dance around it's grave.

I had a stupid Boxer but he made up for it with being friendly and lovable. I can't imagine a dog as stupid as the one you describe surviving!
We didn't raise it. I think the previous owners beat it. I think it's brain damaged, no kidding. Totally worthless as a squirrel hunting dog.
We've got a lad that's afraid of geese. When they fly over honking, his ears go back and he runs for the house. He woulda made a good deer dog in his younger days, he chased down a 6pnt once, turned it and ran it back to us. These days he just chases dog biscuits.

Stan, I have read that terriers make some of the best squirrel dogs, which kind of surprised me. I will say that certain dogs can be unorthodox regardless. Their formative years mean much.
The more research I do on squirrel dogs, the more I’m finding all kinds of breeds can be pretty darn good squirrel dogs. Take ole Henry, as an example.
Lots of dogs will tree squirrels with some even retrieving them. However, when it comes to enduring longer hunts, in difficult terrain, I’m sure certain dogs rise above the others. I know for a fact that a really well trained squirrel dog can cost a lot of money.
