How many of you have dumped a white tail with a .45 RB? I have an accurate load with my longrifle with a 70gr. charge of GOEX 2f and I am wondering if that is stiff enough? I have always used a .58 RB and have never used a .45 RB on a deer.

What are your recommendations for a hunting load with a .45 RB?
Thanks,
Don

I shot a whitetail with that exact load about 5 years ago. Broadside, through both lungs with an exit hole. Was a 30 yard shot, the deer only ran about 20 yards after being hit.

Shoots great with 70 grains, that's my standard hunting load for deer. :winking:

My first muzzleloader deer fell to a .45 cal round ball pushed out by 60g of 3f Goex. It was a 35 yard shot to the head. My wife dumped her first with the same rifle, same powder charge and a Maxi at a range of 50 yards. It blew the buck right off his feet.

I shot a mulie doe in Montana 2 years ago with a 50 gr load broadside @ about 30 yds and she dropped in her tracks. The ball stopped just under the skin on the far side. I'd bet with a 70 gr load it'd pass right on through.

With 36" and above bbls, 65-75grns ffg or 60-70grns fffg seems to be about for a for a optimum hunting load. Anything more you start getting blown patches and I think, unburnt powder. Longest shot I ever took was 125yds(slightly down hill) w/40" bbl. 65grns and .445 ball. Deer went less than 30 yards. Hit lung behind shoulder, busted one rib goin in and 2 ribs on the far side, stayed lodged in the skin. So have faith in yer .45cal, Its a great caliber.

Thanks guys, for all the testimonials on the .45 PRB. I wish you all a 36 pointer with tender meat.
