Trying to think of an appropriate target for August and since August 3rd is National Watermelon Day, I decided to have a watermelon match.

Target should be posted at 25yds, Offhand shooting with patched round ball. One shot per slice of watermelon - 5 shots total per target.

Hits inside the circle count 3 points, hit anywhere inside the slice for 5 points and if you hit any of the 3 seeds inside the slice, score 10 points.

You must have 1/2 the ball diameter inside the scoring ring to count.

Maybe I will be able to see these well enough to hit them!

Hope you have fun with this target.

Gary

Hi J dirt, like all other scoring, 1/2 of the ball should be inside the scoring area. If your ball is barely touching the seed it would score 5 rather than 10. Use your best judgement!

Looks like a great match and dang it if they didn't shut down the rifle range for an "indeterminate" length of time. Good luck all of you!

Finally got back in the game! Shot my hand made maple half stock 50 cal. With a CVA barrel and Late Ketland flint lock. 60 grains of 3f, .490 ball with .015 pillow ticking saturated with Frontiers lube and 3 grains of 4f in the pan. First time it went boom so there is a little work to do on the load before we go huntin.

Well I tried to smash those watermelon slices as well just a little while ago, but I was less than successful. The particulars are:

Gun: Isaac Haines (Chambers kit), .54cal. FL
Load: 65 and 70gr. (last target/bottom target) GOEX FFg + .535" RB (.537" in fact ) from Lee Precision mould + .011" "Sew Classics" 100% cotton twill patch.
Patch Lube: 1 Ballistol : 6 water (no swabbing of bore for 15 shots).

Targets were shot from top left -> top right -> bottom.

Maven, looks like you zeroed in on your last target! Hope you enjoyed shooting it. I will have a special target for September!

Gary, I changed my hold a bit for the last target (i.e., both point of aim and holding the gun) and got better results. Oddly enough, my first shot got a "seed." It was indeed fun, but I almost decided to use my T/C Renegade SB with the same RB & patch combination as it's pretty accurate. Glad I stuck with the Isaac Haines though.

Hate those hang fires! I still need to get out to shoot but I tested positive today for Covid so I will be catching up on my reading for the next 5 days☹️

I just joined the forum this week and looking at some of the posts saw the monthly postal shoots. I have never done one before but would like to try it out. I am likely going to the range tomorrow. I guess I just follow the instructions garypl gave at the beginning. Where do I mail the target?
