Rob I get what your saying about the kit builder's.
Some actually try to figure things out. Others want to be hand led..... My guns might not be perfect but except for the barrel an lock and chunk of wood their made by my hands. Good, bad or otherwise.... LOL
I
Very cool bud . I like and respect that aspect very much

Rob love your work. Big Trade gun fan. When you stamp the fox on the lock and London on the barrel, do you have to anneal the lock plate and barrel before you stamp same?

Using your Hershel House depth gauge mark the barrel depth , web and ramrod groove and hole ....then cut off the dead wood ....

Find your center at muzzle end and at ramrod entry hole , mark line between then , chisel out 3/8 R.R. channel , sand smooth then check depth esp at entry ....then start entry with chisel and drill bit ... Drill the RR hole through forearm , check which way its going witness witness holes drilled down in barrel channel ...mark on side , keep track . go slow on drilling , cleaning bit ....drill to be hr breech end ... I check with wire as it goes ....

Mark along the barrel ,just roughly , mark the length of the lock on the side too ... Then slab off that dead wood . Dont get too close ...better to still have too much than to get too close ...

Then I take a measurement at the bolster on the lock , make marks where the lock will lay , off the barrel side ...then lay down lines and slab off that dead wood .... Gettin a bit ahead of myself but was havin fun and makin headway ...gonna breech the barrel back up and inlet the breech and tang next ....I wire wheeled threads on B.P. and ran bottom tap into breech , clean up threads .... Measure then Mark touch hole location then rebreech it

Always learn something watching a build from Rob.
Thanks for all the info you post on the forum . Heck you could probably make a how to book with pictures that would sell like crazy.
Merry Christmas
Hey Jed . Your welcome bud . I hope all my chattering and such helps some folks out in their building .Merry Christmas to you too bud . Oh ... I ain't all that good but I can build a decent trade gun. These here posts will have to serve folks as I'm pretty d@mn lazy . Gettin worse the older I get too ! I just want to go sleep right now , and its noon !! LOL ! My hero Pryor Mountain Bill Newton made the best building manual for making N.W guns any how . Ifn ya ain't got a copy PM me an email and I'll send a copy .

File your breech plug bolster and tang sides to slight taper , find and mark center at breech ...mark width of bolster , depth too , and mark ...staying inside these lines use chisel and work straight down . Most barrels you just go down till the bolster hole is level with barrel channel , this one ....nope , as barrel has that extra material and hangs down so ....when you start getting down towards final keep checking your depth till top of breech is flush with wood on top ....

If
What he said 😉
If i lived long enough it would be neat to make a building manual for NW trade guns but I would be a bit worried about copying Pryor Mountain Bills book , not on purpose but that's how I learned and wouldnt want to plagiarize his manual ... There's not a bunch I could add to his manual either . The only part in his manual.that I think is lacking at all is the portion on forming the stock from 2x4 stage to gun shape . Everyone's is different ...I do it in two stages , into" roughed in " stage then to " finished shape " stage . His book taught me to build the gun in stages and this really works for me . Be neat to do .....

Plus you could add some really nice pictures of lines an X’s and a few measurements etc .👍I like that idea keep it in mind it’s a really good idea and if Bill could do so can you and yours would be much better because you explain all the details.nuff said ……..
