I made one back in the '70s. Take a long leather thong and spiral it around the rod. Get some aquafirtis (acid) and drip or pour ot on the wood. It'll turn the wood black. I read somewhere that another way to stripe a rod is to wet the leather and pass the rod over a candle or fire to char the wood. Either way a good oiling makes a real good looking rod.
