Clean with paper towel?

The o.p. mentions absorbancy. It doesn't sound to me like we are using the paper towel to scrub stuff or even "swab" much away.
When I use them I am cleaning with water and cotton patches. After my last rinse I push a jag down with paper towel on it, maybe a few times, to absorb any last bit of water. And, we are talking about a smoothbore (I know many posts are being out in sections that they don't belong in lately, but this is the smoothbore section) so I don't see where and how we are going to be shredding the paper towel leaving a bunch of stuff in the bore. A couple pieces ripped off of a paper towel that I'm going to wipe my hands on anyway doesn't seem like a huge expense either.

Normal kitchen paper towels do not work. Your jag will cut them.

Blue shop towels work wonderfully, and they are mainly what I use for swabbing my bore when shooting. They do not work that great for pumping your barrel when cleaning. The reason I don't use T shirt at the range is the simple fact I forget them half the time. I always have blue shop towels with me. When I clean at the end of the day, I do use T shirt.
