i read a story on a forum, can't remember where. a fellow took his caplock rifle and his 36 cal. cap revolver. he shot a deer down and it was still moving so he whipped out the pistol and shot the deer between the eyes, the ball bounced back and wacked him on the shin bone! he was hopping around and yelling! LOL!!

I also live in SC, and I think the deer season is way too long. Soon there won't be any left. I know people that take multiple deer just because they can and they like killing things, not because they need the meat etc. It is a old hold over from days gone by that should be changed.(IMHO)
Do you actually think "baiting" deer is hunting? Do you really want a deer that bad? What ever happened to actual "hunting", like slow walk, still hunting, etc?
Baiting deer is illegal here in South Dakota, so I don't do it. However, before you criticize hunting methods others use because they don't meet your ethical standards, you should consider their situation. I am 74 years old. I have PAD in my legs. Walking much over 100 yards without resting is extremely difficult for me. I don't bait deer here since it is illegal but I also obviously cannot, and do not, "slow walk", "still hunt" etc. ALL my deer hunting is done from a blind or treestand. I consider this fair chase hunting. The only difference I see is that I have to predict where the deer will be without the use of bait. That is not difficult to do since I live in the country and see deer on our property every day. If bait were legal here, I MIGHT use it. I love hunting and don't think I should have to give it up just to satisfy what someone else considers "ethical".
You have to satisfy it for yourself, and listening to you, I do not think that you really believe "baiting" is ethical. We all have physical issues. You do not change the rules/ethics because of it. I hunted NW Penna. Rugged, snow, cold. I always hunted from a position on the ground, behind a huge natural blow down root ball, that i had a little niche in, where i could sit, not have to worry about getting shot in the back, and had some protection from the wind etc.It created a natural blind of sorts. I would sit & sit, nary a movement, and sooner or later that deer would walk by! There were a few time when I got up to take a leak, that there were deer prints 10 ft behind where i sat, and i never heard them! I just laughed and went back to my sitting! I was successful most years but not all, but always had a wonderful time just being in the "game".
