This one is a 16 ga. I aged it a little, it didn’t show well it the pictures. I was shooting for a fun that spent the last 5 or 10 years in a frontier cabin, for whatever that’s worth lol. I’ll post better photos tomorrow.

Thanks! I think I could have done a little better, I wanted the darkening of the lock panels and forearm to be more subtle among other little things. I stained the wood with a golden brown stain that I made and then added even more yellow to it and then used French red over it. I tried brushing it on (French red) and it was way too heavy, that’s the last time I do that . I usually use lint free cloth and wipe it on. You can add coats if you want it darker. I used Kiblers bone black to darken the areas that needed it but tried to be very subtle, I need to work on that. I tried to
Make the steel parts look like iron that had been exposed to the elements but taken care of. I used perma-blue then rubbed it back. That was trickier than I thought, it was tough to knock back with wool and had to use worn grey 3m pads (very lightly) then go over it again with fine wool. It must be a pretty durable bluing, surprisingly.

That picture isn’t very good, it’s pretty reddish brown like an old Winchester , which I like. I do think adding a yellowish dye really helps subdue the purple and grey in black walnut but French red handles it pretty well on its own too as you can see above.

Thank you. I can see the hints of red on your original post. I’ve read about the yellow and alkanet root but those looked too red. I appreciate the color you pulled off.

Here’s some pictures of both of my walnut kibler fowlers together. One only had French red and truoil finish and the other had a yellow brown analine stain applied then French red and truoil top coat with some bone black aging. The aged one was cold blued then knocked back to bright giving it the grey iron look. Screws and triggers were fire blued….
