The only shot I ever fired from a canoe took a nice Minnesota whitetail buck. It was with a Springfield Officers Model trapdoor 45/70, one of those "I wish I had kept". :haha:
Nothing wrong with short barreled smoothbores, especially with ball. I've owned several as short as 18". I just happen to be of the opinion that a barrel of at least 28" will throw a better shot pattern and swing and track more smoothly.

As you have discovered “Canoe” gun is just a modern expression of a shortened barreled smooth bore gun. Just like type C and D models are a modern way of sorting French trade guns.

In times past shortening might have meant shortening to 42” or 39” or less depending on the reason for shortening. What is the persona you wish to portray?

If you are shooting buffalo on the plains from horse back and loading on the run, you will most likely have a shorter barrel. However most canoe men carried the standard trade gun they bought at the fur post.

Yes there were a few guns built or reworked with shorter barrels so if you want one there is no reason not to have one. But, people will call it a canoe gun because that is what we call it these days.

At the turn of the 20th century, Wells Fargo ordered their double barreled “coach guns” with short 26”barrels. Then Hollywood gave us the 20” coach gun.

Thats a beautful gun Mike.
I also perfer a long gun in a canoe because to be honest most things on shore are are usally out of a short smooth bores range.
My shorty I posted is choked and I use it for "what the hell trampsin"
I still call it a canoe gun tho only because of where I grew up.
How does it shoot out to about 50 yds with PRB?
