help with replacement nipple for .54 cal

I have a .54 cal bp from cabelas went to shoot it no go miss fire I thought I cleaned it good before I set out I read the red hot nip is good but what size is it and is it safe to change it now it has been loaded

Did you only try one cap? Real BP or substitute? Was the cap all the way seated on the nipple?

The cap seated yes and tried about 4 or 5 caps real bp pyrodex

Pyrodex is a substitute. Any obstruction in the nipple? I think the thread size is 6X.75.

Any access to a CO2 discharger? Pyrodex isn't the best in a sidelock. Some people have good luck, most don't.

No to the c02 what should I be running for powder and can I change it or I have to unload what should I do

You can change the nipple with-out any worries.
I would try and dribble a bit of powder (you won't be able to get much in there)in the hole before you screw in the new one, and even try and work a wire or something in there to see if there is any powder close. You might have some junk blocking the flash channel.
Make sure the ball is seated all the way down on the powder also.

Real black powder (2F) is what I use.

I've had luck putting some 3F BP in the cleanout hole. Compressed air through the nipple can also work.

You can change your nipple while there's powder in it. Just make sure to have the ML pointed in a safe direction.

I had the same problem with my CVA bobcat (that i might add, has been chopped up) I had to take the cleaning screw out and dump a few gains in bp in to get it to fire - what a p.o.s!

I have a Lyman that has the 6x.75 nipple too. I've replaced them with ones from Mountain State Manu. msmfg.com. I haven't had a misfire since.

Before I found better replacements for my Lyman, I took my original nipples and tapered the nipples flash hole (not the end where the cap goes on) with a drill bit that is 2x bigger than the hole. This, in theory will allow the flash to be bigger and to spread out a bit inside the flash pan area. It worked for me, so maybe it'll help you with your misfires

If you can take a look down the hole with the nipple out, is it full of stuff? If you can, try to work some of the stuff out (with something that will not hurt your threads) before putting in powder and threading the nipple back in.
