It thins out the thickness/depth of the sight.Why would it have the carved side out facing forward?

Well, you ain't the first one that has seen them placed in the opposite direction, thus the confusion.The sight on my CVA Mountain Pistol is just the opposite of the OP's. It came to me that way.
