OK....so a shotgun and a rifle are the same thing, then because they're both fired from the shoulder? Do I have that about right?

My question is: How can something be called a rifle, if the barrel has no grooves and lands, but is smooth from bore to breech?

I didn’t mean to kick sand in your face. I was just pointing out the difference between a smooth rifle and a fusil,or a fowler.
All ml are part of a rainbow. We have all sorts of names for guns. It’s a southern rifle with early Tennessee styling and some Virginia influences, or a late first model Brown Bess with some feature typical of second model, ect etc.
Musket is a large bore smooth bore fitted for a bayonet and is a military gun.... except when it wasn’t.the first muskets were matchlock two men guns used on the flanks, in much the same roll as a saw today. Later musket shrunk became flintlock and finely got a bayonet.
But musket like guns were made for private ship owners, and mini muskets were made for officers to carry, and sold to private citizens, Lisa owned one.
Then musket got rifled and got percussion.
Trade musket, was a term used in the past.
We got our ”˜hhhrrruuuummmppphhh’ out if we hear any random knife with a drop point called a Bowie. However back then they didn’t care as much about terminology as we do today. All of our Ohio style, late penn, early penn, Virginia, late southern early southern, plains, Michigan ect etc ad infininitum werejust called rifles back then.

For a discussion of smooth rifles, see Page 70 of "Firearms of the American West," 1803-1865. They could give near-rifle accuracy out to 75-80 yards and still handle shot very efficiently.

Redstick, glad you are happy with your chief's gun, and cannot wait to hear your reports from the range and field. If you are happy with it that is all that matters -- EVER.

Guys, we just have to keep the urge to urinate on each other in check. Last time I saw this was in the showers after junior high gym class. It just ain't mature -- and there is or was a thread down below about arguments chasing people away. Can't afford it.

Agreed,

The "two-sighted smooth-bore rifle" - shoulder arm of heavy octagonal or 1/2 octgonal barrel equipped with both front and rear sights. The advantage is given in slight range extension of 20 to 25yards over the smoothbore shotgun or musket, handled shot equally and being heavier made, could withstand much tougher use than the normal smoothbores.

Didn't mean to irk anyone off either... again seems to happen more and more around this fourm, which is getting ridiculous.

North West trade rifle smoothbore fowling shotgun musket. Everyone happy now? Geezzz...

Shoot the darn thing and report back in, that's all that matters! I for one am curious as to how well it does.

Redstick, I, too, own a Utilikilt.
Be sure to wear yours when working up loads for your chief's gun. You can wear tight shorts, loincloth, no shorts, whatever, as the weather dictates.
Does it not seem that muzzleloading threads, like the best-laid plans of men, "ging aft agley" ...

:rotf:

Finally took "Old Dad" out to the range this morning and was damned tickled with it overall....

Worst trigger i've ever encountered on any gun, but I can work it a bit and make it better.....

The #7 and PRB both shot wonderfully (2f in barrel and pan)....the #4 and 00 buck loads both need fine tuning as y'all can see from the taped holes in the photo......the .595 holes are from the same distance, an honest 25 yards.

this little gun is a lot of fun to shoot !!
