I worked on carving for about an hour and a half this morning before work. I had a slight tear out, it's going to happen and I don't sweat it. As they say "Failure is the best teacher". I glued it with a clear epoxy from Woodcraft. Once it dries I doubt anyone will ever see it, and Turkeys and Targets don't really care either!

I use to use epoxy but found that wood glue allowed the stain to get into the wood, epoxy won't and might show a line.

Thanks Hatman! This glue I've got is supposed to be stainable. I'll have to do some testing to make sure it is. If not I'll start using the wood glue. Thanks for the tip!

I am making progress on the carving.

I worked on carving this morning. I am almost done. I have on more C scroll to finish, the shell relief, then clean it all up with scrapers.

Nearing the finish line. I applied Iron Nitrate to the stock and blushed it today. I also French Greyed the metal. The second coat of Iron Nitrate is drying now. I plan to apply a coat of Lauren Mountain Forge either Maple or Lancaster Maple stain, then oil it with Jim Chambers Oil Varnish.

It's a perfect day to stain and oil the stock. It's already 77° F with a high of 84° today. I applied two coats of Laurel mountain forge maple stain.
