ok guys, stupid question time again!!

what in blue blazes is the difference between a "shooting bag" and the "possibles bag" and what is the difference of what is typically kept in each one.

i have pretty much been muzzleloading by myself for a while now, and am wanting to start visiting a local group, but dont want to appear totally ignorant , know what i mean.

god bless,

RC,
Hopefully very soon, it won't be in a bag, it will be in a box labeled Lyman

Here are some thoughts for you. Make a tool roll for all the cleaning and maintenance items and keep them together and out of the way.

Use a ball block with pre-lubed and cut patches. I can fire eight shots without having to open my pouch with my flinter. Three on the horn strap and five in a sheath on the back of the pouch. Hang a powder measure from the horn.

If you're going to carry a pistol keep a seperate belt pouch for the balls and caps - just as they did in the CW. Think about making nitrated paper cartridges and carry a dozen of them in a belt block (ball, powder & wadding in one package).

Simplify. I have a pouch for each shoulder arm. Stop thinking of it as a "possibles pouch" and instead a shooting bag. Carry only what you need to shoot the firearm and clean up afterwards. Be merciless and pull out everything you don't use in a day's shooting.

In my opinion...

Your shooting bag contains only what's needed for shooting and your "possibles" are things like, flint/steel, food, etc., which would go in your haversack or possibles bag.

Picture yourself grabbing your gun and bag in an emergency. All you want is your shooting gear - your "shooting bag".

thanks claude , point well taken. I will get this down to a workable system.

stumpkiller, thanks for the infor and photos, i like the idea of a tool roll. right now, mine are either loose in the bag or in non period correct ziplock baggies, neither of which seems to add to my enjoyment or organsization.

hopefully going to a woods walk tommorow, dont know what to really expect, as i havent been to one before.

thanks for all the feedback,

I use a leather pommel bag with the saddle loop drawn up and held with a shoulder strap. Works great and has four total compartments. I keep powder and containers in one, tools in another, bullets in the third and primers, patches and cleaning stuff in the fourth.

Thanks for the pictures!! Gives me ideas that I find need to give body to. May I assume that the "square piece with the round part sticking out" is a short-starter? :surrender: If so, did you hollow or recess the end that fits over the ball? Your pictures are perhaps more informative than many lines of text. Thanks, again!

I carry one bag for 3 calibers to simplify my life. The tools Stumpkiller has in his roll I have in pouches sewn into the inside of the face of the bag so I can open the bag and grab one out of one of the pouches. Cleaning do-dads are in one leather pouch, flints in another. Pillow ticking patch material is in a strip just loose in the bag.

I have patch knife, horn, priming horn, powder measures, vent pick on thongs, straps, or pouches sewn to the bag straps. These are all shared items with all of the guns.

Any gun specific items like balls, I keep in pouches and change out depending on what gun I'm shooting.

So the basic shooting platform stays the same for all guns.

wow, lots of good feedback. sounds like i need to make up some pouchs or containers, or get a different bag all together. mine is a real cluster, and when i went to the shoot the other day, it was rather embarrasing on how much time i wasted fumbling through everything. its gotta change fast, or i will get frustrated again.

anyhow, being the blonde that i am, any more pics are really helpful.

I used a one pocket bag for years and like you it was a mess to get any thing from. Plus I carried too much in it as the bigger it was the more stuff I could get in it. I just made one and it has two pockets full size. On the divider it has three made to hold tools like short starter, inline capper. Loaded ball block. patch knife tell I move it to the back of the bag later when I fish my new knife. the pocket behind the divider I put my lube and powder flask if I am going to use it and leave the horn at home ( hunting deal) the front inside pocket gets the patches and balls both in there own bags. There is also a small out side pocket if I want to use it for extra patches or balls for faster retrieval. The bag is 7" wide and 8" tall all I change is the balls for my other guns as all are 45 or 50 so the same patches work. I also have some leather strips if I want to hang some things from the bag or horn for even faster reloads on the run.

One organizational tip could be if you are constantly looking for something not in the bag, add it to the bag. If you've been carrying something around for months and never use it, take it out and leave it in the car or camp.

Simple leather pouches with drawstring work just fine for balls, flints, tools, etc. and can be easily made out of deer or elk skin.
