As I have stated in a couple of other posts I would like to start shooting a percussion rifle. Some of the reading I was doing was saying that percussion caps are getting hard to find. Would I just be wasting my money? Should I just start with a flintlock?

I have had no problem finding them. In the last couple weeks I have been in 4-5 gun shops, and they all had #10 and #11 standard and magnum caps. I actually bought a couple tins of magnums this weekend, as I have never tried them.

I suspect if you go check your local shops, you should be able to find them. I am real sure you are MUCH more likely to find them in a shop than flints.. lol.

For the past couple of years there has been a component shortage coupled with a lot of "hoarding" that has made percussion caps (and all manner of ammunition) scarce at times.

I live in "small town Ontario Canada" and last month we finally got a back order from CCI for thousands of #11 caps both regular and magnum.

If they are making it to my small spot on the map there should certainly be no shortage anywhere in the US.

For a while there, caps were very hard to find but are now becoming easier and easier to find. If you are inclined to buy a caplock, do not be concerned about finding caps because they are out there. I was in a Bass Pro shop not long ago and they had Remington #11 caps hanging on their rack. They were in blister packs containing one can of 100 caps but they had several of the packs hanging there. I have always bought my caps in boxes of 1,000 caps (10 cans). The last box that I bought, I got at Friendhsip and I am still using them.

Buy your rifle, the caps are out there.

I just posted this ? under shooting accessories as I went on line after no one n town having and any and noted almost everybody out! Finally ordered 1000 11M from Jeremiah Star. Dixie had some limited to a single tin (plus haz mat?, whats that $35.00 a tin?). Bass pro, cabelas, midway, TOW as well as many others out. Like looking for .22lr!

I have not noticed a particular shortage of percussion caps, unless you are out in the wilds without any. :(
I do believe however you would be wise to start (learn) with a flintlock. My reasoning is this that with the transition from flint to cap there is no transition as you do not have the pan-flash to get used to. By starting with a flintlock you are already used to the pan-flash and the caplock would be like just picking up a second rifle.

Shoot Flint

Try maine powder house as well you can combine caps and powder with one shipment and pay one hazmat fee.

Simple solution is to change your nipples. TOW has #11 nipples for most revolvers. If you change all your nipples to #11 you will have only one kind of cap to hunt for. I was having such a hard time finding #10 caps that I just changed my revolver nipples to #11 and solved my problem.

Cabelas and such get them in (and sell out) quite often. Do what I did and get what you need for the year. I go with #10s- they fit my pistols, and it takes all of two minutes with a power drill and file to grind a #11 down to accept them.

I did this with my Pietta revolver. Still need to do it with my ASM revolver, that I have yet to shoot.
Stupid car repairs got in the way of buying bullets and nipples. :(

Last time I said I bought 1000 caps at one time I was accused of being a nasty hoarder, even though Cabala's only sold them in lots of 1000. :surrender:

Wow, nice.. I did see a guy fill most of a shopping cart with 22lr the other day. He had likely had 50 bug box's of 500 rds, and 100 sleeves of cci's of so. I guess they yearly shipment came in for the gun shop. Anyways, he took all they had. The salesman asked him if he was a preper and what he was going to do with that much ammo. The customer says theres a gun show next weekend and I am going to double my money, if not triple it since I will own the market. The salesman took one sleeve of 100rds out said Sir, this is all the ammo your alotted to buy today your not getting rich off being a jackass. He didn't even buy the 100 rds because he doesn't even own a gun. I however bought 500 brick right outta his old cart.

No worries I go through 1000 caps a year no problem. Then again I shoot, have 3 kids that shoot, and always have a needy friend thats to lazy to find his own.
