What’s the strangest thing that has happened with you and your muzzleloader? I’m going to say for me it was at the range. Was all loaded up and capped. Trigger pulled, no bang. To my amazement the primer for the cap had been knocked out of the cap and sat on the nipple. Never before or since has that happened.

Was a windy day at the range , but the wind was blowing from my back down hill towards the targets. No other shooters , just me. Covered firing range , and the cloudy day was going fine. I was almost finished , and the wind from my back stopped. Then I saw the wind reverse direction uphill backwards toward me. All I had was time for , was to grab the expensive custom flinter and duck. The strong gust scattered my shooting equipment , except my sand bag rest , on the floor of the range building. It was what is called a "down burst "wind from a downward vertical direction. Saw the results of another down burst in the driveway of our hunting camp. That one was somewhat beneficial , as the black oak trees it crushed in a 30 yd. circle , became easy firewood for camp. Down bursts are freaky and unexpected. :dunno:

I klatched the lock four times on a really nice buck less than fifty yards away before he casually strolled away. I was sitting on my comfy cushion with my back to a fairly large oak and stayed there looking over my rifle for obvious reasons for no fire. After maybe ten minutes I hear a blow very close over my left shoulder. I eased my head around to see and there he was less than five yards away looking me in the eyes. I eased the cocked rifle around and was able to aim, all the while he is still blowing. I pull the trigger, klatch, no spark, no fire. Off he goes. I call it a day. Back at the shop I look closer as to the problem and discover a light film of rust on the frizzen. Cleaned it and problem fixed. Now scotchbrite is always in the possibles bag.

WOW the feeling of that i bet was like the worst thing ever to happen. Wife had wanted to hunt so i gave her my old 12 gauge pump that i had from 73 and sat behind her watching this nice 8 point walking to her then stops 20 yards away.Pulls the trigger ..CLICK.. dam gun wouldnt fire off he runs. WE went home and i tore it apart and all the years of spraying it with WD-40 JUNK made a shellack build up inside the bolt and what a terrible job of getting it out soaking the bolt in acetone.GOOD IDEA THE SCOTCH BRIGHT. Ive shot 100s of deer and am just going now with a flinter.Hers one with a 58 renegade cap

I did similar but the fault was me. I missed a really big buck at 12’ with my trad bow. Shot right under it. I needed psych help after that and it still pains me to think I missed a gimme shot at the biggest buck of my life. But it happens and the buck never got wounded so all good!

I had the same thing happen with some old free caps that I had received.
The primer came loose, and blocked the fire channel through the nipple, without me noticing it.
Two caps later, I saw what was happening.
Cleared the channel, and it fired like it should.

I wonder how often that happens? Now I know at least there’s two of us😁

A few years ago had four point walk up and gave me a nice shot. I aimed squeezed it off flash in the pan! He ran about 60 yards away stopped turn around started walking back. So I started picking touch hole re primed he stopped at about 20 yard away gave a broad side. Again aimed squeezed it off again hang shot and missed! He did the same thing! I reloaded while he was walking back. He stopped again at 20 yards and gave me a broad side! This time everything worked lung shot went down just out of sight. I call that deer the suicidal deer.

I blew the nipple out of a percussion gun once….
Figured that was enough of a reason to shoot flintlocks from then on eliminating the possibility of that ever happening again.🤣
I’ve done that too! Scared the snot outta me, but I still shoot cap guns.

I shot at a deer, missed....35 yards, how I missed I don't know, I am pretty sharp with that rifle.
Looked at the deer looking at me, called over to the deer 'if you are still standing there when I get reloaded I am shooting you'.
Loaded again with a conical because that is my second shot due to load speed, bambi just kept looking at me chewing on grass, told her 'I am capping my rifle, last chance to flee'.
Popped off that shot and it was an instant dirt nap for that deer. Ate on her for the next 4 months. Didn't buy a meat box from the butcher that year. Second best deer I have ever taken. (Best was a juvenile. The hunting season was any deer and that deer was there and I am not a trophy hunter at all.)

I figured that was a case of god saying 'yeah my bad, your shot should have made it, here is the easy shot.'
