What do you use those for in shooting?
Those are used for wadding in my smooth bores. I’ll use a piece over the powder and another over the shot or ball. I have even used them in a .50 caliber rifle with a .495 ball. Just load powder, wad of wasp nest, round ball and another wad of wasp nest.

In May, 2021, I posted some pictures of my range session using wasp nest (wasper to us Tennessee folks) for wadding in a rifle. The thread title is “Wacky Shooting “ in the percussion rifle section. That was an experiment to see how accurate the gun would shoot with that load. My usual load for that rifle is powder and a patched .490 round ball with homemade lube.

I prefer using wasp nest for wadding in smooth bores with shot or round ball. Sometimes I will use jute tow or brown paper for wadding but wasp nest gives me the best pattern. Wasp nest seems to seal the bore better than tow or paper.

Got the Pedersoli Kentucky down. It`s always had a stiff single trigger and floppy trigger to boot. After reading the trigger is mounted too low and needs more inletting or the trigger hinge pin re drilled higher. After looking at it decided to try just wrapping the trigger sear/ trip lever with copper wire?. A very simple process and nothing of the original lock changed. Well the floppy trigger is gone and trigger pull is most defiantly lightened ,I would say by about half. Always hated that trigger!!

Love to see pics of how you did that.

I have the same issue with my Kentucky. I've been trying to find a new trigger for it. Really wish I'd bought a different gun - That's how much I don't like the trigger.

Tried working up a load for this thing. It held a pretty tight group when shooting two handed at 25 yds. One handed was abysmal as expected. I have a feeling I'll be swapping grips out for something a little slimmer.

25gr Scheutzen 3F
.015 patch
.350 ball

I'm not sure of any rules against posting pictures of these "abominations." Please be gentle.
A bit odd-looking, but it's a flint. I don't see anything objectionable, much less unmentionable. Looks accurate.

Hello Everyone!
I recently finished my .54 Kibler Colonial in fancy maple. I did some very subdued incised carving on the patch box, ramrod molding and near the entry pipe. My first attempt. Not perfect, but I like it. Here is a photo of my second five shot target at 25 yards, benched. I know this rifle will shoot better than me. This target was 65 grains of Goex

FFG with a .530 ball and .018 patch.
Next are photos of the rifle with accoutrements. My brother made the powder horn and gave me the rifleman’s knife and Virginia axe. We should all have and be such brothers!
Now for some summer fun making smoke!

Shot my Pedersoli Frontier flintlock at 100 yds off hand. 60 grains Schutzen 3fg and a .490 ball. Happy to get on a 10" circle, no wind at all helps. Had 1 pan flash today. Have had a couple here and there. I clean at the range but when I got home I popped the lock off and had a look. I have had this rifle since April, and have shot maybe 100-150 balls through it so far. The lock was very clean with almost no BP residue on it inside. While I had it off I checked the vent hole with a 1/16" drill bit and it would not go all the way through. Thinking maybe a burr in there. So I carefully drilled it all the way through. Should help, will see tomorrow when I shoot. Lubed it up and put it back together. I can see how easy it would be to strip that little wood screw, have to be extra gentle. But since it was clean inside, I won't be pulling the lock off every time.

RR, really appreciate your keeping us, (me), up to date on you venture into flint. I'm down to browning the barrel and final fitting of the traditions flint I'm using for my first flint.

Great shooting ! And God Bless !
Eric

Good Job!!!

I am not somebody who tinkers with things or enjoys taking things apart to explore the inner workings. Just not wired that way. Although I do appreciate that lots are. Good on ya’ if that’s your thing. So pulling the lock was a little stressful thinking I was ruining my rifle by not checking long before now. But it was easy and set my mind at ease that all was good. Now it’s lubed up well and clean in there. I was happy though to check the vent hole and see that it was drilled 1/16 at the factory but not quite finished right. Whatever it was the hole is clear and ready to “rock”…. :)

It’s misty rain west of London, Thinking of draining my 15 ft dia pool and making it go from green to blue , re previous comment Very cool but sitting on patio , chipping away, inletting my flint lock barrel into the stock it’s a bit tedious I must admit . I did buy well buying this slab of 5 cm thick bit of walnut for £54 and it’s made three stocks If I can do it so can you

I wish you well
