Score !! I went to a gun show today and bought 8 bags of shotgun shells for $20. Probably 3/4 of them are the old paper cartridges and aren't much good. I bought them all as there is every shot size imaginable in those, most being 4's, 5's and 6's. When I need a shot charge, all I need to do is cut off the end of the shell and Voila !! A pre-measured shot charge that will go down the tube for my .54 smoothbore and 12 gauge SxS. I'll never need to buy any shot again.

Thats a good buy and a good plan, but before cutting the paper cased ones do a bit of research on the brands some of those are worth a fair bit to collectors.

Holey Dooley! It's as dry as a dead dingo's donger up there on the tops! Living on the coastal flats can get a bloke feeling that everything is alright with the land. But in the burbs, our constant use of sprinklers and inground irrigation systems will have us believing a lie, that's for sure.

I had intended to hunt over the last four days to get some meat with the Parker Hale 1858. I've proved a good load over the last few weeks but upon seeing the state of the block, I decided to keep the powder in the flask. The Chital were plentiful, drawn to the verges of the primary river system for browsing, but oh, they were so lean and struggling for condition. They sure didn't need me to add to their list of obstacles. A good rain will see them pick up again.

So, instead of hunting with the big '58, I decided I would practice my stalking skills with the Canon.

Come walk with me ...

Cheers, Pete

Nice walk about!

Amazing how comfy these are except I always have a hard time getting out of it if I sit too long :ghostly:
I made this one with the seat at 14”. It’s a little easier to get up from than 12”.

I made some out of redwood back in the early 80’s and they lasted 30 years, the last 20 years they were sitting outside on the patio, spring thru fall, 24/7. That redwood is purdy good stuff. Hard to get now.
Those were with a seat height of about 12”, but I was much younger then!

put the sneak on the buck i saw yesterday. got within 100 yards with him being screened by a bunch of 2 year pine reprod. started to close the gap and the message alert on my phone chimed. yeah i know. Leave the phone home E.T..
i would, but she who must be obeyed, made me promise to take the dang thing in case another bear took a dislike to me. or i fell down and couldn't get up. or i got lost. or...................
hunted over 50 years without that dang tether but she worries about me. sweet isn't it. or maybe its just i have the combo to the valuables safe in my wallet?
anyway the buck went his way with a snicker and i shuffled home.
finished inletting the Roller lock into the cherry stock. shaped the sideplates and figured to carve a couple cherries and a stem with leaf at the back end of the lock cheek.
i was pretty proud of the results until she came out and inspected the attempt. "Looks like that male prostitute sign we saw in Pompei".
now has regular old boring flat cheeks.

Well @deerstalkert, if you had bagged the buck then you would have had to clean it. I always keep that in mind as the day ends.
yep! and the hunt would be over!
Brother-in-law's hound trailed me yesterday. i mentioned it to BIL this morning. he said to let him know next time i go out and he would lock the pup up.
i told him it was fine, i was just hunting, not trying to kill something! the fun ends when blood is drawn.

Had a shoot out yesterday between the Uberti '58 Remington and the new Pietta Stainless target '58 Remington. In spite of the Pietta's sights shooting high at the lowest setting the gun was trying to make friends. I eventually was able to file down the rear sight blade to get the gun to shoot actual POA at 25 yards.

I can see that buck having a conversation with his doe:
"You're home early love?"
"Yeah. I got a phone alert saying there was a hunter in the area!"

😂🤣

I always put my phone on vibrate only when in the woods, hunting or not, hate to be disturbed and disturb the wildlife.
i tried that but missed the message alert somehow.
in years past deer season started, my wife invariably would cook up a big pot of chili. more than once i have scared months of life off some poor deer with a stomach rumble and resultant trumpeting.

So true. I passed on a herd bull one year because it was late in the day and I was way down a hillside with eight inches of we snow on it and a couple inches of mud under that.

I have a watch that buzzes when I get any communication on my cell phone. I tried vibrate on the phone and I just don't hear or feel it. Might be a useful method to have the phone active and not alert the game.

I don't hunt out the back door like so many here. Wish I could! So this might not be practical for your situation but I have it because I'm almost always out of cell service when I hunt and even with my wife knowing where I'm going it would be a long time before I'm missed and then even longer finding me or my carcass.

hunting the back 40 is the only time i am off the leash. even though it is a leash of my own choosing for the last 55 years. one of the worst days in my life was the day i bought a cell phone. remember those bag phones? 40 lbs of ball and chain. life completely changed with that technology.
