As stated before, I have been a NMLRA member since the mid '60's. I started into it during the Civil War Centennial, and continued on through the Bicentennial years, and on into buckskinning from 1979 through 1986. In 1987, I got started in national-level competition pistol shooting. I shot on the pistol line from '87 until the booth closing in '98. I still miss not going every year.
I had a commercial row booth in the Lamb Sheds at Friendship from 1973 until closing it down in 1998. I sold custom-made long rifles and David Wright limited edition prints.
For anyone, who is a member, the annual report of the financial papers of the NMLRA are printed in the Muzzle Blasts every year. For those concerned about our profit realization, we had to cancel the Western National Championship Matches, held in February each year. Last year, only about 100 competitors attended. I think it was a money-losing venture for some time, but we were trying to reach out to members in the Western US.
I have been informed by the national HQ that our Territorial Match Program is losing money, about $10,000 a year. The Territorial Program provides members AND the shooting public to attending one or more of the twenty Territorials across the US (It used to be more than thirty). The aggregates offered mirrored those shot at Friendship at the spring and fall championships. I have volunteered as the NC Match Director for the NC Territorial since the late '90's. The national office will be cutting back on the medals awarded and raising the registration and aggregate fees to $10.00 (up from $8.00) in an effort to get the program in the black.
There is not a "good old boys" network running our organization. The members vote the board of directors in and the ones with the most votes gets in. All of the officers are volunteers and attend business meetings at their own expense. The Treasurer is a former president of the NMLRA and holds a Distinguished Master Pistol Badge.
As I mentioned before, we are supporting our "physical plant" at Friendship IN and all of our programs and staff with half of the membership strength that we had in 1987.
I try to think positive about our organization's future, and will do all I can to promote it and muzzleloading. If you choose to join or renew your membership, you will enjoy the new magazine format.
As I mentioned before, the NMLRA is an "umbrella" organization. We focus on firearms in American History, gun collecting, hunting, re-enacting, and competition shooting, just to name a few.

Get the field reps to contact potential members, be visible and accessable and you might get more members.
After 5 years and more requests then I can count and I have never been contacted. NMLRA has basically shown me they have no interest in supporting or promoting muzzleloading.

Although its a great organization it really serves no benefit unless you live in close proximity and enjoy the benefits of such.
Picked up a copy of muzzle blasts at Dixons and it was mostly advertisements.
Not for me.

Only saving graces is that im in the NW corridor sussex and is still largely uncontaminated politically in comparison to other Counties.
Plus bow season runs mid Sept to Jan. end.

I am a member because it is the only major organization that supports and promotes the use of muzzleloading firearms. Dues have gone up over the years, but, heck, so has everything else. I enjoy the magazine also in spite of its occasional mention of inlines. I do not have much interest in them, but do not view them as the devil incarnate as some "purists" seem seem proud to announce. The majority of content relates to traditional muzzleloading and I consider the magazine pretty good (much improved just recently). I have never been to Friendship and, at 74, the chances are declining that I will. Of course, I have never been to Camp Perry either, but I still belong to the NRA. No organization like the NMLRA will ever please everybody, but if you have a strong interest in the black powder sport it is worth while, IMHO.

I didn't mean for "the old boys club" to be a negative comment.
What I mean is the rest of us scattered all across the country do not personally know most of the Indiana crowd. We don't know many of them as very few actually travel to territorials. (I met maybe 2 at a terr. ) Folks vote for those they know, so the usual suspects get re-elected.
I see a lot of people getting defensive. The NMLRA has obvious issues. I don't know how anyone expects those issues to be resolved without having honest critiques.
More money or "members" won't solve their problems, it will just allow them to be ignored. The problems will still be there, waiting to surface.

There are some who believe there are some topics/organizations/beliefs/ideas too sacred to be criticized (sacred cow). There are no topics/organizations/beliefs/ideas that are above criticism. As a matter of fact, ALL should be subject to scrutiny and criticism.
Went to the NMLRA web page to see where and when the NC Territorial would be held in 2019. Looks like the latest posted schedule is from 2016. Curious if it is always held at the same facility (2016’s was in Fayetteville, about fours away from where I live) or if it moved around from year to year.
I don't know and never met anyone on the list, or the ones I voted for.
I see a lot of people in this thread, I bet less than half are members of the organization they are complaining about and I'd be surprised if more than two other people posting in the thread up to now voted for any one running.
I believe the organization originated in Indiana. They built their headquarters in Friendship Indiana. They opened the facility and the organization to any one in the country with an interest in like activities. I don't think there is a more pro 2nd amendment organization of any size in the country on a per member basis.
What do these people here think any way, may be 50 people in Indiana get together to promote something they enjoy and .... HO OH,WAAAAAIT A MINUTE! Just because we all live in ten minutes of here, what if 50 years from now that one fellar out in BFE Nebraska wants to shoot his muzzle loader? We better all pitch in and drive a couple days out there and build the head quarters. Just in case.
NRA, NMLRA those are the two top gun and 2nd amendment organizations in the country right now. That is my opinion. I'm not knocking any one else or any other pro 2nd org. If you like another better, join it. But if you join one, it's no concern of yours how another spends their members money or what they do or decide and promote. Worry about ya'lls own organizations. I'll take care of the ones I join. The ones I join, don't need to knock down the others to feel successful.

Sharon Mountain muzzleloaders is not a club, they have two events a year for re-enactment, I have contacted them, asked them if they had any one that would be willing to meet with someone new, they have no one to talk to unless you show up at one of their events, they claim to be a club for insurance. If you like shooting bp guns the NMLRA is all about bp guns.
Yes , they do have a few non traditional weapons shooting contest.
But I don’t know of any where they are allowed to compete on the Primitive Range .
If your that much into Traditional Muzzleloading , that’s where most of the action is anyway, not on the covered range side of the road.
I have known of several Guys and Gals from the primitive side going across the road , competing and doing well.
But I can’t recall ever hearing of anyone “ having too” compete against a modern bp gun with a traditional gun.
I could be wrong , but I’ve never heard of it...
Muzzle Blast list two off hand in—— shoots , one in May, another in August. Both are on seperate weekends from any Traditional shoots.
The NMLRA host several LRBPC rifle shoots, pistol matches and even a .22 caliber shoot.

So no the NMLRA is not a well oiled machine, however over the 10 years that I’ve been a member I can say this...
The Muzzle Blast magazine ( the one that’s full of ads) has made a dramatic improvement , the Facility has made several improvements with more planned in the near future.
FYI- most ads I see in Muzzle Blast are traditional Muzzleloading related or advertising traditional style shows or events.
I get it that everyone can’t travel too Indiana, but you can become a member and I feel sure if you contact the Organizations Head Quarters they can assist you in whatever concerns you may have.
If your State doesn’t have a Field Rep , maybe you could be one. I’m sure they would appreciate your help in getting Organized Events in your area.

I looked on the NMLRA website and found the NC Territorial schedule with the dates I submitted in October 2018.
The dates are April 11-14, 2019.
I will have the 2019 Territorial Schedule & Shoot Program on our club website by the end of this month.
We host it because we are near the center of the state, and have been holding it since 1990. It’s a great deal of work to put on and administer it; lots of paperwork after it’s over, too. It requires a minimum 100 yard range, capable of handling 50 shooters on the line.
Meaning no disrespect to anyone being four hours from the range, the Territorial, being open to all comers, has brought, in recent years, competitors from WV, VA, NC, SC, GA, and FL. Rodney Ingram, has brought his benchrest rifle here for the past 19 years without fail from Jacksonville, FL. He makes the 13 hour drive to Friendship for the national matches in the Spring and Fall every year.
Last year, we had a competitor from Iowa, who also competed in our side match, shooting BPCR at iron at 300 yards.
When we pile the four of us in our club, into the Ford Expedition in March, it’s an eight hour drive to the Brushy Creek Rendezvous and Shootin’ Match in Lenox GA. Five days of shooting at the largest shooting match in the South, 80 competitors in 2018.
Again, no disrespect to anyone about the distance. You have to love shooting in competition and meeting new friends who share the same interests as you. When it’s in your blood, distance is “small potatoes”.
