you know i just read an article in a hunting mag where this guy dropped a boar black bear at 85 yards, 1 shot with a 50 cal T/C. even showed a pic with the guy and the bear. so the answer is YES you can stop a bear with a flinter

Killing and stopping are two different things. If you shoot a charging bear and he mauls you before he expires, you killed him but didn't stop him.

We have black bear hearabouts and I'm pretty sure I could "stop" one with a single properly placed .45 ACP round. We have had some found locally that died from birdshot and .22LR rounds, also. Most are no bigger than a good sized NFL lineman and many taken locally dress out not much heavier than a large whitetail - 250 lbs & a bit larger. More like oversized raccoons (stake out a dump or birdfeeder as likely "hot spots" . . . some sport).

Grizzly or even brown bear are a whole different critter.

Would you bet your life on one shot with a flinter? Black bear are a joke compared to a grizzly. Kill yes stop not very often. And no I have never been charged by a G-bear. But have seen plenty of Black ones and they are not hard to kill. But doubt if a prb would stop a mad one chargeing before it tore me up. :( Larry Wv

When you get back from your hunt, post pictures and tell us about it.

If you are able.

i absolutely will! the thing that gets me, is the average grizz is only about 600 lbs, the average black is about 400 lbs, whats the big deal

Hope you have a good hunt. A cape buffalo and a hereford are also both cows. :v Larry Wv

And be sure to let us know if there is someone backing you up with a 12 gauge slug gun, a .450 Marlin lever action or a .375 H&H Double. ;-)

Long as we've moved from the theory of stopping to the reality of hunting, I'll jump back in with this.

I know two guys up here building 72 cal flint rifles for someday Kodiak brown bear hunts. Both have asked me to back them up with my 375. Might or might not do it if they ever get around to their hunts, but in favor of my decision are the character and shooting skills of both hunters. Long on experience and cool heads. I've been around browns for over 30 years, and I'm very fast and accurate with a 375. I don't regard either of those guys as casual hunters, and I trust their shooting about as much as they trust mine.

Long ways from scheduling their hunts, and as a matter of fact both have to finish their rifles before this can move any further. I'm dying to shoot both guns, so I wish they'd finish up whether or not the hunts come off.

Your average black bear will be treed by just about any breed of dog that will chase it. For how Grizzly bears react, just read the Journals of Lewis and Clark.

72 cal is about what I'd want in a flintlock too if I was to hunt grizzly. And yes a backup in the order of a 375 H&H or a 470 nitro express would be just fine thank you. yet as you stated it is the hunter himself and the cool head or not that is the big driver.

The .58 I'm waiting on has been set up to allow the use of t-rex slaying conicals as well as round ball. But no thanks on griz. For those who need it, yall come back now, ya hear?

i already know and its no big deal

I think Hugh Glass might have disagreed with you.

The question isn't, "Will a flintlock stop a bear?"

It should be... "Can a bear stop this thread?" :rotf:
