    Idaho DFG / Traditional ML

Runner is right! having first hand experience in passing legislation; you have to start somewhere. At least you have "a foot in the door", you can build on that. I hope to see a Traditional season here in Maine someday. ML season here for most is just a last chance to get a tag filled after...

    Your First Muzzleloader?

About 8-10 years ago I had a couple of buddies bugging me to get into the sport (more so for the December hunt). I fought them off as long as I could until one day I got a call from one of them telling me to get to Sam's Club and buy one of the ones that just came in for $100. He said "try it if...

    Dutch ovens

I bought a 12" Lodge Lewis and Clark commemorative DO this summer, it came pre-seasoned, it also came with 2 small books that referenced care and recipies. We love cooking in it and have bought a couple of other cookbooks just for DO's. The only problem is that with the great meals and desserts...

    CVA Hawken

Greywhiskers is right on target, check the barrel first, there may be a reason the nipple was rusted in, one shot can ruin a gun if it is not cleaned after. It still may be wotrh $25 even if you purchase a new bbl. go to http://www.cva.com/ and they may be able to help you out. or send them a...

Lee REAL bullets in a round ball barrel

I shoot the REAL 50 cal. 320 gr. in my 1-48" Hawken. I have taken 4 deer with it so far, 3 in the "boiler room" and one in the throat head on (he went over backwards, 20 yds.) the other three were 35-50 yd. shots and they didn't go far before they ran out of gas. I am very happy with the REAL.

    Woods Walk

I was thinking of a scoring system....for instance you have 10 or 20 shots with each scoring up to 10 or 5 respectively for a maximum of 100. maybe have a bullseye with scoringrings, hit a gong 4 pts. cut the gongs string off 5pts., hanging steel plate with 1 inch hole in center-through the hole...

    Woods Walk

I am planning on setting up a woods walk. I have some "gongs & clangers" I've made from junk steel and tanks. I am open to any ideas from someone who has done a woods walk i.e. different targets, distances, rules, etc.

    goex powder?

Wow, sounds like a pretty big touch hole...early armies used to use that approach to do what is called "auto-prime"...poured the main charge, bumped the butt of the musket on the ground a few times, and the pan is full! It's a Traditions Pennsylvannia with the origional touchhole. I used to...

    Hunting in the rain

I am not sure what "Kap Kovers" are but a few years ago I puchased something that was no more than 1/4 inch long pieces of rubber tubing that fit snuggly over a #11 cap. I used these in wet weather and also found that they helped keep a cap from falling off. I put them on so they covered half...

    goex powder?

I agree that 4f is out, I tried fffg thinking I could use one powder for all of my .44 and .50 cal. guns. seemed to work OK except in the .50 cal flintlock, it kept filling the pan with powder from the breech, so I went back to ffg in that and all is well.

    find lead where?

WW lead is very hard, it would be ok for a smmoth bore. I use lead flashing from around chimneys. I get it from roof and Chimney contractors. they would rather I pick it up from them rather than having to sell it to a salvage yard for pennies a lb. Or check local salvage yards. FFFarmer
