Have you tried any of the companies that sell stock blanks? Maybe they have some end cuts they'll send your way.

Question for you period knife guys

If you want to see some very good reproductions of period knives, check out: Tim Ridge of Swamp Fox Knives http://www.swampfoxknives.com/ Old Dominion Knives: http://www.olddominionforge.com/knives.html And though not completely authentic, the knives of Matt Liesniewski still have the look...

Question for you period knife guys

No, they are not forged. They are stamped out of sheet steel, given a sabre grind, acid etched until they have an old look, and then a handle put on. They cut okay because they are thin. They are usually stamped RT (River Traders) or DMP (David Palmer), etc. They are usually full tang rather...

    hunting or possibles bag--patterns?

Hi guys, I haven't been around in a while since I've been so busy, but just thought I'd leave an update. I picked up some canvas material finally, a welding blanket from Harbor Freight. 5x5 for $18, but it was the only place locally that had anything in the way of canvas that wasn't too thin...

    Ohio may be changing

It's great to comment here, but if you really want to be heard, make it to one of the hearings that will be held around the state to discuss changes to Ohio's regs. If you can't make it to one of the hearings, send comments in writing to your local Division of Wildlife district office.

    Ohio may be changing

Ohio law distinguishes between antlered and antlerless, not necessarily between buck and doe. So, if it does happen to be a buck that dropped it's antlers in early January, you are covered. I think they are trying to spread the seasons out a little bit so that people don't get burned out...

    bedding compounds ???

Hope you mind me jumping in here with a slightly related question. Since you mentioned bedding compounds, how many of you builders bed your barrel channel? I realize that the nature of cleaning a BP gun is different from modern cartridge guns, but I was just curious. . .

I've seen African blackwood, antler, or calanite for the mouthpiece in various hawks.

    Aging brass

You can use a variety of chemical oxidation techniques to get the particular look/age that you want. Here's a site I found a while back with some patina recipes: http://secure.sciencecompany.com/-W12C672.aspx#26

    hunting or possibles bag--patterns?

I use Barge cement for gluing the welt of my knife sheaths before I stitch them up. When you guys lay out your pattern, like the fowler pattern for instance, do you use the pattern as is, or do you add an extra 1/4 to 1/2 inch to account for stitching once the bag is turned right-side out?

Nice job! What did you use for a strap?

    hunting or possibles bag--patterns?

OK, more questions. About liners. I'm guessing on an Eastern hunter style bag, or fowler bag, that liners were more prevalent. Closer to civilization, more individuals closer to commerce and wealth, so they had nicer gear. What kind of materials would have been used to line the bag? Some...

Thanks guys! This site is a wealth of information, I'm glad I found it.

    hunting or possibles bag--patterns?

Looking at the pattern for that fowler bag, I can see how that could be. By the time you put anything in there of any size the front and back start wrapping around and so your 8 inch wide bag is now 5 or 6. When I attempt that pattern I may add a 2 inch gusset between the front and back to...

Great shots on the silver screen...

One of my favorite movie shots is taken by Gus McCrae (Robert Duvall) in Lonesome Dove. He's stranded on the plains, being chased by Blue Duck's banditos. He kills his horse (dumb in my opinion) to form a foxhole to hide behind. Taunted by Blue Duck's men, who are shooting (and missing) with...

    hunting or possibles bag--patterns?

Cool! I don't think our store had those, though I know I didn't see everything. Those would make great inlays into a stag crown on a knife handle as well. No kidding these hobbies are expensive! At least with knives I can sell one once in a while when I need more money for supplies.

    hunting or possibles bag--patterns?

I've thought about doing that, but since up til now I've only made knife sheaths, and only make about 4 or 5 knives a year, it didn't have a big benefit for me. If I do get addicted to making bags like you guys warn, then I might need to join up!

    hunting or possibles bag--patterns?

Ya--I'm not about to use the thick stuff for a bag. I have some lighter weight stuff around from another project. I have some upholstery grade leather left from a rocking chair project I did a while back. Thick enough, very flexible, and looks great when scuffed. I have a Tandy store nearby...
