    Your favorite barrel length ??

I can't imagine anyone seeing a big disadvantage to a 46" barrel in your application. Maybe something like "I hit the doorframe with it leaving the house because the dog ran past me" or something. Here's why I have a 46" barrel on my 20 guage smoothy - the builder was offering a good deal on a...

    BP in Maryland

No sports/gun shops that do BP in Prince Frederick ? If you ever find yourself in Waldorf, Fred's Sports ( http://www.fredsenterprises.com/ )is as close to a "full service" BP shop as you'll find in Southern Maryland. A one pound can of 3F goes for about $22 there.

    Barrels, Twist, etc.

There is a third way. Some manufacturers are making a sort of "slow-twist conical", for example the Hornady Pennsylvania Conical. As the name suggests, I reckon they were trying for a light conical to use in a long, slow twist, PA rifle barrel. I'm shooting them from my .50 GPR this Deer...

Looking for my first Muzzle loader

I got started in BP with re-enactment constraints, so some choices were initially made for me. Lately I decided to get more of a hunting gun, and researched it broadly. It took awhile, but now I'm happy. I looked to commercially available items only. You really need to know what you want...

    After the shot...

I'm on with donating Deer and use our Maryland Hunters Feeding the Hungry program. Processing is done by local butcher shops, but you still need to bring in a field dressed carcass. A few years back I found a surplus source for Butyl Rubber chemical protective suit gloves - cheap. They cover...

Conicals in round ball twist barrel

I've been shooting Hornady PA conicals as a hunting load from my GPR ( 1 in 60 barrel, if memory serves ). They've been just fine with 70 gr. of FFFg pushing out their 240 gr.s. Lots of "uumph" out to 75', and beyond. Also, they can be had for as little as 13 cents per from some places, and...

    FFFg use with conicals

I worked up a hunting load for my .50 GPR with PA conicals ( 240 gr. ). I use 70 gr. FFFg behind them. I moved up from 60 gr. for no real reason. Either way, recoil is "enhanced" and projectile energy is more than adequate at 50 to 100 yd.s. My unscientific test = damage to the 2 x 2 survey...

is is ok to shoot with only 1 barrel wedge?

My rear pin dropped out while I was sighting in my GPR. I don't know how many shots I may have taken before I noticed it ( maybe thats where those "sinkers" came from ! ). Happily, I rooted around in the grass where I had laid the gun down and found it. I slapped a piece of tape over it and...

How Early is Your ML Season?

Maryland ML season has an early "week" ( starting C. October 20th + ) and 2 "weeks" later on ( starts c. Nov .20th ). Late period is usually good, some years ( like this one ) it's way too hot even in late Oct. ( gotta stay on that global warming thing). You can buy a permit as an...

    Hunting method / Still hunting

It should start snowing here today anytime now.... that makes for great still huntin'. Scouting is productive with a few fresh inches on the ground. It's easy to differentiate between light and heavy deer use areas if you have snow cover for a few days - and no pesky ATV'ers obliterating...

    Proper Camo for deer huntin?

The camo I've got comes mostly from "super discount" off-season sales. I wear it more for work clothes than hunting... I've got a half acre clover field at one end of my place. Soon before the season started in Maryland I was mowing around it with my old Allis-Chalmers. I didn't even notice...

    about the jaëger

Disclaimer - I'm not a French & Indian War ( Seven Year's War in North America )expert....Napoleonic is really my predominant area. That said, I haven't seen any mention of Jaeger rifle use in Canada by continental French, or Canadien Habitants. That doesn't mean a few didn't find their way...

    1717 musket

Interesting off-topic....My "10-minute research project" on that dredged this up: Quoting "an old writer" (otherwise unattributed)a reviewer of The Abbot, by Sir Walter Scott, quotes this description of the battle of Killiecrankie... "Where the worthy Lord Hume fought on foot with his pike in...
