    A Kentucky Squirrel Hunt

I have a horrible time trying to identify my oaks, even after so many years in these woods. The round-lobed leaves are white oaks, and the spikey ones are reds. This much I've learned and work slowly forward from there.

    Peep on .40 Squirrel Rifle

As I tend to shoot everything right square in the head, I don't think the choice of a hot loaded-.32 cal would be considered questionable. Now if they'd only open up turkeys similarly...

    A Kentucky Squirrel Hunt

I'm in Louisville ("the settlement") as well, and find Taylorsville to be a welcome respite. Currently working on the **** barbecue and happy to report things are going famously! Supper will be around five o'clock, if any of you would like to swing by...

    mixing powders

Same here. Swiss will produce dramatically different POI than Goex, and vice versa. I shoot primarily Goex, because it's what's available locally. If I were to switch to Swiss, Elephant, etc, I'd plan on a completely new "working up of a load"...

    Vent pick

Well, I had a paper clip and a file available. Not even vaguely PC, but it works great...

    Building Track's Colonial Longrifle

The most complex patchbox imaginable is actually pretty easy to inlet... as long as you have something like $5k worth of the appropriate carving tools. :rotf:

    mixing powders

I like the old cans, too. As to mixing BP, I have never once seen or experienced any issues as a result. I remember starting out and being told I MUST prime with FFFFg or the earth would be thrown off its axis and all the babies, kittens, and puppies would die! This was, of course, poppycock...

    Peep on .40 Squirrel Rifle

You should be able to do some excellent work with that sighting setup! Following along because I'm curious about the POI shift, as well. I keep threatening to build a .40 cal because that's our cutoff here in Kentucky, too. Well, at least it's the minimum for deer. I think we can shoot small...

    Maybe A GSR

My .54 flint GPR came with a barrel that'd been left sitting for a bit (several years?) after firing without being cleaned. It's currently in the process of being converted to a .56 cal like Liver-Eatin' Johnson's, so I've got little to contribute. I can say that even a .54 GPR gets heavy on the...

    A Kentucky Squirrel Hunt

I'll just bet it does! Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed the post. Are you in reasonable proximity to Taylorsville Lake? You and I are more than a little blessed to call the Middle Ground home. I never tire of sitting in these woods and considering the history I'm surrounded by.

    Tennessee Valley

I've not done business with TVM, but have heard enough good things about them that I wouldn't hesitate to. I just finished an early Lancaster early yesterday and absolutely love it! These are big rifles, and not quite as fine and graceful as later types, and really suits me. I hunt Kentucky and...

    A Kentucky Squirrel Hunt

Sorry guys, but I'm in the process of migrating from Photobucket to Flickr and sharing images from Flickr is a bit different. Hence the mostly image free state of my initial post. Changing out all the image codes exceeded this site's time limit to edit, and there you go. Following SHOULD BE the...

    A Kentucky Squirrel Hunt

An excellent practice and one I should've done, but managed to completely overlook it. That little gray "died" twice and didn't even know it!

    A Kentucky Squirrel Hunt

I took off from work yesterday (10/27/17) and headed for the woods to try out the new early-Lancaster rifle I’d just finished the night before. The weather was forecast to be cool and partly cloudy with a bit of a breeze. There was a good-sized creek draining into Taylorsville Lake that I’ve...

    Martin Wetzel's double-barreled rifle?

You've probably already seen it, but I found a reference to the rifle here: Double-Barreled Rifle

    Building Track's Colonial Longrifle

This mirrors my experience. I always smile when I see the "Easy to build!" comment TOTW lists somewhere near the title of each of their kits. I've found the kits to be "easy" to get out of the original packaging, and right about there is where "easy" gathers its kit and heads on back to the...

Mild steel knife + case harden?

I've made several patch knives over the years using this method. These were mostly the result of me finding a piece of nondescript mild steel and thinking, "hey, that looks kinda like a knife!" I'd just rough in the blade and then give it the Kasenit treatment, then finish it out and set it in a...

    English squirrel hunt.

Looks like a fine hunt was had! As to the enormous photos, I right clicked on the images and chose "open image in new window" and they show up appropriately sized to fit my screen. I've got plenty of good squirrel recipes, but nothing for crow (raven?) or jays (or whatever the blue/grey bird...

    lock "tuning " link

Good advice here, and the way I've done it for years when working at home. FWIW, I'm a tool and die maker and frequently grind components to +/- .00005" (fifty millionths of an inch) and the method described here has proved to be more than adequate for me. An interesting point to the above, our...

    Interesting hunt!

Congratulations on a successful hunt, overcoming adversity like you did, and especially, on not giving up. It can be easy to forget that every animal and every shot will be different, so we can't always go on appearances. I'm reminded of the story told by one of my friends from western PA about...
