    1849 Colt cylinder question

Have not tried a repro cylinder in my 49 but I have a Colt 1860 Army that came to me missing it's cylinder. I have a Uberti cylinder in it now and it works quite well. If I ever find a Colt cylinder at a price I'm willing to spend I'll probably buy it but continue to use the repro cylinder for...

    Medieval artillery.

Somewhere I have an old book on artillery that had prints of a gun like that. Used a chamber piece that was inserted and then had some kind of wedge placed behind it to push it up tight against the breech. Wish I knew where that book was.

    Model 1842 Haston Pistol

Hopefully you'll be able to get it up and shooting without too much trouble. I have one of those I got a few years ago and it's a good shooting gun. I got mine fairly reasonable because someone had dovetailed a rear sight onto it and replaced the swivel ramrod with a standard ramrod. Probably...

    BP vs Pyrodex

Personally I think Black cleans up easier and I've never had a problem with rust showing up after a few days (which had happened to me when I used pyrodex). Also, it is the only propellant tat works properly in flintlocks and it ignites easier in caplocks (in my experience). It can take a little...

What got you started in this hobby/sport?

I think a fascination with history started it for me. I remember touring civil war battlefields when I was a kid and I was fascinated. The tales of the past got an early hold on me. Loved the history books (still do) and novels based in the past. The first gun I bought for myself was a...

    Unusual Percussion Conversion

There were also the "pill" locks that used a pellet of fulminate. There are several surviving examples that used a magazine that would release one pellet at a time for priming (look up Forsyth, "scent bottle" lock) but some of the first ones used a converted flint pan and cover and were primed...

    Musket caps ??

I haven't seen the RWS flangeless caps but have used some older Navy Arms flangeless ones that I found at a gunshow. Don't know who actually made them but they worked fine for me. So long as they fit the nipple correctly they should work as well as the flanged ones I would think. btech, wonder...

    paper cartridges

I don't have the book handy but the Colt foil cartridges were covered in one of the older biographies of Samuel Colt. He actually spent quite a bit of time and effort to get the government to buy his waterproof loads for everything from handguns to cannon. They worked well though he had trouble...

    New Pistol! (to me)

Very nice! I have a rather plain version of that CVA, not as pretty as yours but a fun shooter. I have used both .375 and .380 rb's in mine. The .380's shaved a more distinct ring off when loading but both work okay and shoot well. Can't help with the nipple size as I am still using the ones it...

    cva police pocket

I have one of these, 36 caliber, brass frame. It's a decent copy of the Police Pocket model with a brass frame. It was a kit gun, bought years ago. Usually shoot 15 grs 3F with a cast .375 RB. Good accuracy and lots of fun to shoot, really like it.

    45 cal sidelock pistol

CVA used that style sideplate back then and most of their guns were Jukar out of Spain. I built several of their kits back in the 70's, still have a Kentucky rifle and a Tower pistol that I built from their kits. Still take them out to the range now and then too.

Flea Market find, What is it?

The modern looking drill marks in the lock recess certainly make me think it is either a kit gun or an attempt at a home built custom gun. The hardware doesn't look like any of the kits I remember building but it may have been one I never encountered. Maybe someone else will recognize it...

    Two finds today

They might have been kit builds too. Those were usually "in the white" and most people used some type of cold blue to finish them. Hard to get a good, durable finish and many people quit too soon. I built a couple years ago and it took quite a while to get a finish I was really happy with. Looks...

    DGW Brass mold

I have one of the brass molds that I got second hand. The previous owner had drilled the handle and added wooden extension handles to it. It throws one round ball and one conical and actually makes decent bullets. With the wooden handles it is just as easy to use as a modern mold. I have a...

    Traditions .50 Kentucky Pistol? Questions...

I wouldn't worry too much about the spring tension, most of my flintlocks have stout springs and I still get decent flint life out of them. As to the Traditions marking being on the underside of the barrel I would suspect that the markings were applied wrong at the factory and it just got sent...

ID of Pistol with Filligree Lock

The lock looks like a couple CVA gun locks I've had (think I still have a gun I built with one of them). The CVA "Tower Pistols" used that same lock I believe. Do a search for CVA parts and you should be able to find someone with parts for it. Also, if my memory is right, the pistol looks like...

    Pepperbox / Transitional repeater

Interesting piece. I have seen a couple similar guns at OGCA shows but they must be pretty rare. The ones I saw before had a bar type hammer and outward nipples unlike the one you have there. I have to wonder if they were prone to multiple discharges like a standard pepperbox. The one you have...

    Armsport Inc. Miami, Fla MOD

Since the gun passed proof in spain and you describe it as being clean with little, if any, rust in the bore I probably wouldn't worry about reproving it. The pressures indicated are standard for Black Powder Proof which is a much lower pressure than smokeless. If you really worried about it I...

    Help to identify

The lockplate doesn't really look much like anything I have encountered that S. North made. It really looks central europpean, possibly austrian or german. belgium is also a possibility. The barrel may indeed have been shortened, hard to tell from your pics. Are there any other markings...

Question for the "old guys"...Is it just me or are there others?

I somtimes feel like a left over from the stone age myself. I was born in the 50's, loved TV westerns, Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett and developed a fascination with history from the shows and the books I read. The first gun I ever bought with my own money was a flintlock pistol. I had been...
