    Southern Mountain parts set

In my opinion, the Durs Egg is closer to the type of lock you might actually find on a SM rifle. I have actually built 2 of them using that lock, both in .36 cal. Also I have had better luck w/ GM barrels. I've used several of them in various calibers. I did use a Colerain once in "A" weight but...

The origin of the dragon side plate?

I am certainly no arms historian, but I have been curious too. It seems to be some Medieval affectation carried over into the 17th and 18th centuries. Weren't dragons/serpents fire breathing? Are they just artistic embellishments, or was there supposed to be some mystical connection to the gun...

    Aging Venison

In the past I've always skinned and butchered my deer right after I've killed it or if it was late in the day hung it and waited until the next day. I know this isn't optimal. How long can you let a deer carcass hang in 50-55 degree weather, if it is hung in a shady area encased in one of those...

    Changing locks, Precarve??

I used an L&R Queen Anne in a Jacob Dubbs smooth rifle kit I got from Mold and Gun shop. The stock was inlet for the large Siler originally. It worked out quite well.

000 buckshot in GM .36 barrels?

I use the Hornady 000 in my .36 Colerain and it works fine. I save my lead now for casting larger balls.

    .62cal shooters in the MLF?

I have a .62 cal. Jacob Dubbs smooth rifle, a Type D trade gun in .62 cal (20 ga.), and a NW trade gun .62 (20 ga)

    Tulle - "Fusil de Chasse"

You might try RE Davis. There is a nice looking kit for a French trade gun http://www.redaviscompany.com/kits.html I haven't built this kit, but it is yet another choice with a longer barrel than either Pecatonica or Track offers. I have used several of RE Davis' locks and found them quite good.

    Trade Gun Barrel Lengths

Dave, Thanks for posting the info. Do you know about common calibers or gauges and the time periods; e.g., 20 ga, 24 ga, 28 ga and when they were most likely manufactured? And/or what was the most likely barrel length and caliber combination? Thanks, Beowulf

    Sight placement

I assemble the gun first and figure out how I will carry it so that when my hand is wrapped around it I won't have the rear sight under the palm of my hand; then I place the sight (usually behind where I hold the gun). A slightly fuzzy rear sight is no problem. The eye can still find the center...

    French Type "D" Tradegun

Greetings, Very nicely made trade gun. I am in the process of assembling components to made a "Type D." Questions: Were the originals stocked in walnut (probably European) or were some originals stocked in maple? What is the most likely bore size 24 ga, 20 ga or some other? Finally, what would...

Question about L&R Queen Anne Lock

Perhaps I misunderstand, but to me it seems as if the fly is doing what it is supposed to do: prevent the lock from stopping at half cock from the fully cocked position. On all my locks when I want to go from full cock to half cock, I slowly let the hammer go all the way to the pan so it is in...

To Cone Or Not to Cone

I've coned 2 with the $37.00 tool (at least that's what it used to be). The first was a .36 cal; it works great, I can start the ball and patch with my finger, cut the patch off, ramrod them onto the powder. I didn't have to sight in again, no change in point of impact nor in accuracy as far as...

    R.E. Davis J. Dubs Kit ?

I ordered the Jacob Dubbs smooth rifle kit from Mold and Gun shop last year. I ordered walnut with sliding wood patchbox. The only modification I made was to use a round faced lock (Queen Anne) from L&R Locks. The kit came with mortise inletted for large siler. It is 20 ga and works pretty well...
