    TC Hawken Cougar

How does one go about getting one of those kits?

Did frontiersmen really carry Neck knives?

Is there a web site that shows clasp or Laguiole knives from the F&I War period? My ex-wife has a very old Laguiole style knife that has scales that apprear to be Rhino horn. I'd like to see what time period it might be from and maybe make some like it.

    Drum vs. Patent Breech

My mid-1970s vintage patent breech T/C Hawken has NEVER failed to fire BP, Pyrodex or Triple 7. And that's with a several brands and ages of percussion caps. I currently use Remington hot caps, a T/C Hot Shot nipple and Wally World Pyrodex because I am either too poor or too cheap to buy enough...

    forging, anyone done much?

Could you give us a few more details about the trigger you want to make and it's application? I make all sorts of triggers and sears out of O-1 tool steel. No help on the Borax question. I've done lots of forging but haven't forged welded yet.

    Reducing trigger pull ??

Drug out my trigger pull scale and measured the old Hawken. Unset it's just a ounce or two under 3 pounds. Set it's 14 ounces - a little too light for my likes but I never use it set unless I'm shooting from the bench - it's OK for that. BTW, I checked my records and found I bought the new...

    Reducing trigger pull ??

The best way to lighten a T/C Hawken unset trigger I've found it to shoot it for 30 years, lol. I had to replace the sear on mine a few years ago when the sear bar broke off. I didn't know about T/C's lifetime warrenty at the time and spend $12 at TOTW for a new one. I would guess my unset...

Making a knife out of an old file?

I heat treat the forged knife in my coal fired forge, not with the oxy-acetylene torch I use for stock removal knives. If my stock removal blade is longer than 7" or of an unusually heavy section I heat treat it in the forge too. I make a slightly rich, slightly oxygen starved pocket in the...

Making a knife out of an old file?

Let me interject my two cents worth here: IMHO, y'all are making this knife making thing way too hard. I've made well over 700 knives. I started out using saw blade material but it was too hard to find in the quantities I needed so I changed to O-1 tool steel. I made a few file knives for...

    Hotshot nipple for CVA Bobcat??

I bought a T/C Hot Shot nipple for my Hawken at Wal Mart a couple of years ago. T/C still shows them on their web site. Don't know if your rifle has the same thread but if it does that would work.

These eyes ain't what they used to be

at the ripe old age of 66 I'm in the same boat. What I found works for me it to use a wider front blade and rear notch and Wal Mart +2.50 reading glasses. I'm using a .150" wide blade on one of my rifles. I don't like buckhorn rear sights. I tried various peep sight configurations but all gave...

    home made peep sights

I made these for my T/C Hawken. Top one has a thumb wheel with 5 detents. Used a 40 tpi so every full turn is .025" in elevation, or divided by 5 detents is .005" per click. I designed this one for hunting so it has no windage adjustment. Secone one is a traditional vernier tang sight. Used a...

    Interesting Cleaning instructions.

Taking the nipple out of the drum or snail will not wear out the threads, at least not in one lifetime. Their threads are tapered and don't wear like straight threads you find in modern weapons. I always use Never-Sieze on nipple threads. Similarly, removing the barrel from a wedge pin secured...

    bullet casting

Recycled air gun pellets. Air gun pellets are mostly pure lead. About the only ones that may have a little other stuff in them are Crosman. Air guns don't like hard projectiles either. I cast round balls, Maxi Balls and a couple of my own design from my pellet scrap and have had good luck with...

Conicals & Rate of Twist in TC Hawken

True, I usually use 60 grains of powder for round balls and get satisfactory accuracy. I guess for a hot round ball hunting load it might be better to try a slow twist barrel. I haven't really tried heavy loads with round balls in my 1 in 48 inch twist barrel since I only hunt with bullets. For...

Conicals & Rate of Twist in TC Hawken

I use 90 grains of Pyrodex RS for deer and 100 grains with MaxiHunters for elk or for deer in more open areas where longer shots are a possibliity. I prefer heavier 370 grain MaxiBalls for elk. I have found that heavy loads of Pyrodex can cause gas cutting of the base of a bullet. Pyrodex...

Conicals & Rate of Twist in TC Hawken

I guess I might as well throw in my 2 cents worth. A T/C Hawken will reliably ignite any black powder or substitute you put in it. I"ve shot BP and Pyrodex in my .50 cal one for 30 years and have NEVER had even one failure to fire. I use #11 Remington and CVA caps. Must be something about the...

Anyone Shooting a Green Mountain IBS on their T/C?

Hummmm, I've been shootin the same old .50 barrel that came on my Hawken since 1976 and have never seen a reason to replace it. Back when I bought my rifle there were no cell phones, PC computers, internet or funny cylinder bored muzzle loader barrels. I can still shoot a minute of beer can with...

    Ahm a Pyrodex Man....

"Does any serious muzzleloader go beyond five shots without swabbing a bore?" Apparently a lot of us do. I did a short test to see the difference between brushing and swabing my rifles bore and shooting without cleaning when shooting MaxiBall bullets. My rifle was more accurate when I didn't...

    Proper Cleaning/ Your thoughts

I think all concerned will agree that the barrel of a muzzle loader should be cleaned as soon as possible after firing the last shot prior to being put away. Before cleaning I remove the barrel from the stock and take out the nipple and cleaning screw from the snail for seperate swabbing...

    Ahm a Pyrodex Man....

After watching my black powder cartridge buddies shoot metallic silhouettes and the warm-breath-in-the-barrel routine they go thru to soften fouling between shots, I had a thought: I think some of the variation in posters results here between Pyrodex and real black powder may be due to the...
