That’s quite a rock Ed. It looks like wood kinda in the picture.

Sorry about no squirrels. I’m surprised you saw any in the wind!
Funny thing is, I was leaning up against a smaller one beside it trying to get a shot at a squirrel. It too, has some unique characteristics. I didn’t even notice them for about 10 minutes or so.

No one can ever convince me that the big guy upstairs doesn’t do good work.

That is on a steep hillside (imagine that, ole ETipp being on such) and it appears that, that large boulder had rolled down the hill at some point and what you were looking at used to be the bottom side. At least that’s what I’m thinking. I suppose it could have broken off from another chunk up higher and that was in the center of them.

Well fellas, looks like I’m a failure once again. Went to the woods this morning on a squirrel hunt/deer scouting mission and came up empty handed once again. It was overcast with light rain and gusty winds. What few squirrels I saw were up in tress and I was not able to get a shot. Not the first one was on the ground. I really needed a good squirrel because it’s been so long now, but it wasn’t meant to be.

I did find this big boulder about the size of a Volkswagen, maybe a little smaller that is very interesting. This time I happened to have had my cell with me so I could use it as a card reader for my trail cam. So, I decided to take a few pics to share with ya’
all.

This will probably have to take up a few posts to get them all.View attachment 359412View attachment 359413
Very unusual. Petrified stump?

Didn't get to go Wednesday but made it out to the woods for a bit this afternoon. Took the .40 out this time. It's a Cherokee with a Douglas barrel and weighs next to nothing. A pleasure to carry. Saw no squirrels at all but did have four deer pass by pretty close. No dumplins but still a good trip to the woods.

Glad you were at least able to get out, Tim. Beats the heck out of staying home. Fall is a favorite time of year for many of us.

Oh how I’m wanting this deer hunting thing to be over with so I can get back to my squirrel hunting. One more deer might do it for us, two would be best. With this evil and insane political situation worldwide nowadays, my thoughts are its best to stock up on provisions as much as possible.

I’m hoping to be able to go back squirrel hunting/deer scouting tomorrow and Monday. The weather here has not been kind to us this entire year and doesn’t look to be changing next week. So, I figure I might as well be out there easing around and doing the best that I can anyway. No sense in sitting around the house bellyaching about it.

My trail cams prove that the deer chase phase has not yet happened here in this area. Also, the only activity I’m getting on my trail cams are during the night. Historically, the first week of November has been the chase phase. I sincerely hope that remains before the orange army war begins in one week from today.

Also, and to my surprise, squirrel stupid season has not happened yet either. Many trees in this part of KY still have about 35-40 percent of their leaves with many oaks still dropping acorns. I’m still seeing squirrels feeding up in oaks on a daily basis. Those little buggers just do not want to give up those trees and are seldom seen on the ground. Until this changes, it’s very tough to get a shot at them.

Soon, very soon, squirrel stupid season will be here and then things “should” change in my favor.

Not sure, Cruiser. That side was almost certainly what used to be the bottom. There’s actually round rocks and clay imbedded within it, as well as sandstone. Very characteristic of the typical ground here. There’s also areas where it appears water had drained or seeped though, as in running under it over the years. Although I had a darn cruddy day yesterday, that find did shine a bit of brightness upon it.

After I found that awesome rock and walked another couple of hours scouting, I made my way over to the location where I’m attempting to establish another bait site. Just as I was nearing, there was a very large possum standing in the middle of it chowing away. Right smack dab in the middle of the day. He saw me and headed into the thicket before I could get a shot at him. Checked my trail cam and the only other critters on it were several coyotes and one squirrel.

After viewing that, I felt like Forrest Gump and Lieutenant Dan when they first started fishing for shrimp aboard the Jenny. Not a great day yesterday but at least that rock helped the mood some.

Just an update about my ear and the effect on my hunting. I've had the implant 5 weeks now. The outside part was "installed" 2 weeks later. It is pretty amazing. I've been here at the farm for most of the last month mostly working on the cabin, but also attempting to fill some of the special CWD tags the state wants me to fill. Between being busy working on the big project and warm weather, no deer have been harmed in this endeavor. That should change as we get closer to the firearms season and the deer get more involved in procreation.

In the process of sitting in the woods with my old man archery equipment (crossbow for you youngsters) I found I can hear squirrels barking at considerable distance. The downside is I cannot tell what direction the noise is coming from. I've been a sight hunter by necessity for a long time and this abundance of game sounds confuses me. Hopefully this will improve in time.

I have decided to change my squirrel hunting strategy to that of a deer hunter, but I will have to try it to see if the little motherless tree rats can tell I'm not there for the deer. I have historically seen far more of them while hunting deer than hunting squirrels. I think they can tell. More info as I experiment more.

Overall, I'm very happy with the device. I can understand conversations without asking people to repeat what they say constantly. It really is life changing.

I’m glad things are starting to come together for you. It’s difficult not being able to hear like one should. It’s not fun. I tried a pair of those tactical ears when I was elk hunting out west. I found the same thing, trying to pinpoint a sound wasn’t easy. However, that was years ago so I have been considering trying another type for squirrel hunting. It will not be another pair from Tactical company, considering one side on the pair I had stopped working and the company would not support me in any way.

What state do you reside in?

Most likely the reason for squirrels not minding your presence as much whilst you deer hunt has to do with the nut crop situation at that time.

@pilot I understand that directional thing. When I wear electronic ear protection at the range I can clearly understand conversations taking place 100 yards away but no clue as to the direction.

How does your device work in the wind?

Ed, I would send those pics to the state geological office or local college. My first impression was that you've got some fossilized bone and the composition of that "rock" makes for good potential.
