I passed on some RWS caps a few days ago. They were 9.50 a tin. AS far as I am concerned they can shove them for that price. I hardly ever shoot a cap gun so will lay in a bigger supply of flints. Larry

3rd gen shooting supply has em for 2.99 (plus hazmat n freight). nly gotta buy 5 tins to come close to that price.

Ya, Its a rip off. Only one store here in Flagstaff has caps and they want $9.95 too. Say they are getting outta BP totally due to lack of interest n sales. I advised that perhaps the lack of sales was due to the fact that even with shipping the prices they have listed can be beaten bout any online site?

If I needed caps I might get one or two and leave some for other folks.

Tip Curtis had them in Phoenix for $12.00/100, that is ****.

The Bass Pro by me charges around $27.00 a pound for blackpowder, I think its around 23 a lb. for pyrodex. I only shoot flintlock so I have no idea on caps. The only blackpowder I've bought from Bass Pro was 4ffff prime. I'll call PowderInc. for my 2ff Olde Ensford when I get low since it works so well in my .40 cal. I get 10lbs. of powder normally. I can't afford the big 25lb. order :( .

One has to remember what these box stores have to go through just carry/sell it
Cabelias and sportsman wear house in my neck both carry pryodex $20+ per pound and caps $6 to $9 per 100
But neither carry black to much trouble for what they can sell
But know box store can never compete with ponline sales no matter what it is
But i got sper lucky estatesale got 4 new still sealed geox f grade $2 a can and two tins of caps $1 each

Wait...Bass Pro has black powder? I asked one time recently and was told that the Pyrodex out on the shelf was all they had. Of course, it's possible the kid behind the counter didn't know what he was talking about.

Do I need to ask one of the old guys if they have it stowed behind the counter somewhere?

Old guys are the ones who know things. I'm always disappointed when I go to the hardware store and there are only teenagers working.

Ya ask an old guy. I called Mesa AZ Bass pro few months back as a buddy headed down the hill and was gonna get it for me, they said NO. Well next Monday a guy here posted he had bought 2 lbs there that same day??? Ya pimples n powder don't mix. At least they should hire an outsdoorsie type guy that knows there is a difference?? Bettin the kid I talked to had his pants down around his knees n such (ya I know, I'm old n grumpy) :shake:

State regs changed in my area and not worth a store owners hassle to carry bp so not all will carry it

That can happen with regular store clerks.

The thing is, in order for a store to have black powder they must keep it locked up in a sealed, Federally approved storage area.
That's why it can't be on the shelf with the other powders the store has for sale.

Most clerks don't know what the storage container is for or what's in it unless they have been told by the manager or have gone thru the process of getting the key and actually selling some of the powder.

The best thing to do when asking about black powder is to get a hold of the manager and ask.

If he is new at the store, he might not know about the powder either.

Yes--they had it in Hampton, Va. BUT, it took them at least 20 minutes just to get the key to just open the vault, then another 5-6 minutes at least, to figure out how much it cost, since the barcodes had not yet been applied to the cans.

Also, why all the big federal storage rules for BP, but NOT for faux BP?? Does that make any sense to anyone?

Does that make any sense to anyone?

Does any of it make sense anymore :idunno: its all :bull: these days. Whats good is bad and whats bad is good and on and on we go :td:

Simply put, because black powder is classified as a low power explosive.
Pyrodex and the other synthetic muzzleloading powders are not classified as explosives. They are merely "combustibles".

To understand the difference between the explosive nature of black powder and Pyrodex (or the others) pour out a little pile of black powder and use a long match to light it. "POOF!!!" A tiny explosion right there before your eyes. :shocked2:

Now, do the same thing with a little pile of Pyrodex. "whossssssch". :( No flash. No POOF.

This is why the synthetics can sit right there on the shelf next to the smokeless powder but the black powder needs to be locked up.

It's also why you or I can sell the synthetic powders without a Federal license but we will be busted if we sell 10 grains of black powder without one.

Just a general reply, I was at my local gun store the other day and sitting on the counter was 2 cases of no. 11 primers, the lady said they had been on order for a good while. Guess what they were going to sell them for? $8.99 a hundred! I'm glad I shoot flintlock! but I called her back later a got 3 tins put back for my brother, the poor guy ain't got nobody around him that has any. I would sure hate to think its a dime every time I shot. It sure does make it a short range session.

How many miles do you drive to your range? At the IRS rate of $0.55 a mile (depreciation for business purposes, and those numbers are pretty realistic) you have to figure that in to the cost of your shooting sessions too.

So if you shoot 30-40 rounds of BP at each session, (which would be a goodly number for most of us) that's a whopping $2.70-$3.60 you're spending on caps. And, if your $1.75 flint is worn out and usually discarded after 30-40 shots, you can take another $1.75 off of that number.

My range is about 5 to 7 miles away. I can sometimes hear people shooting at it when I'm in the front yard. Its gated and you get a key when you join. $100.00 a year. You may be right about the costs but it a lot easier to get flints than caps, and you don't have to pay HAZ-MAT on flints. The store with the caps is around 20+ miles away, and they have been waiting on the caps for a couple of months. I know it may sound tough but I hope they put a limit on how many tins folks can buy.

Not much longer, with all the folks crowing about using flints and the cost savings versus caps, there will be a shortage of flints.

Soon as the government finds a way to tax them, just wait and see what each flint costs.

How many folks can realistically go out and find flint and turn them into useable flints for their rifles?????

If it was not for Tom Fuller and TOW, how many folks would have flints?

In my area, there are no flints for sale and you could not find one on my ranch in a year of looking.
