That butt plate looks great and I love the square nails. Working with the brass is much easier than that 100-year old steel, huh?
Thanks bud .... Oh yeah ! much easier . Can't wait to get my forge fixed up.and going and try annealing a piece of the old steel . Ive forged a couple trigger guards from it too but that last one that broke....Mmmm .... That was a shame . I was SO liking it .That butt plate looks great and I love the square nails. Rob are your butt plates same width all the except for the whately shape on top of comb and rounded bottom ,2”s wide by 6”s long end at 4”s.Trigger in and working ...measure your length of pull , mark it , square of tope of yer comb and mark it good for saw .Cut off any extra wood at buttstock end .Cut out yer buttplate , I use a Whately style buttplate pattern from Bills book . I cut it out rough then grind and file it to finish , bend tab over in the vice , anneal if you can , then lay it on , over the heal of buttstock and trace the B.P. tab ....inlet it down flush ...then mark your 8 buttplate nail holes , still them , I make nails . then I hammer on that ole buttplate ....
Ive never checked but I'd guess they are all different widths . You do have a copy of Bills trade gun building manual , right ? I used the Whately pattern from itRob are your butt plates same width all the except for the whately shape on top of comb and rounded bottom ,2”s wide by 6”s long end at 4”s.
Just guessing by looking at the picture.
I met and talked with a guy at Kempton last week that had a trade gun he built. I was asking him about it and he told me he got a lot of advice from you before starting it. It looked good so you musta done a good job teaching.A cheap loose leaf book would be kind cool . Much like Bill did it . Very inexpensive so anyone could afford it . I really wonder though , doesnt seem to be many folks will or wanting to try to build .I could be wrong but just doesn't seem like to many hard core folks willing to do the work , sure would like to help out any such person though . Also ( joking , having fun here ) ...a few folks on this forum tell.me I'm full of $hit and do t know what I'm talkin about so maybe I'll just stop . I'm just making all this $hit up so I can try and look smart to everyone anyway ! LOL
Very kind of him....he done all the work though . Hope I can help folks every once in awhile . I remember my first couple trade guns , LOL ....I was calling Ken Netting and Cecil Brooks asking them dumb " new builder " questions . They were very patient with meI met and talked with a guy at Kempton last week that had a trade gun he built. And now you're returning the favor. Next I may be asking you some dumb questions!! i bought a trade gun barrel from Rice at the show. No walnut stock blanks though. Guy told me walnut is hard to get right now.Very kind of him....he done all the work though . Hope I can help folks every once in awhile . Oh , sorry ....on top of comb . I do believe the Barnett comb is a little more narrow on top of the comb . You can check the pattern in Bills manual .. . The Barnett pattern is really nice buttstock design ...more rounded flowing lines . Funny , I dont know why but I always make a Whately style for myself ... Not really sure why but that cruder style just suits meRob are your butt plates same width all the except for the whately shape on top of comb and rounded bottom ,2”s wide by 6”s long end at 4”s.

I just got a Rice barrel from.my Buddy Tommy , gonna use it for a Fusil de chasse build . Good lookin barrels but I have no experience with the them . I really wanna see one of their feather weigh barrels ...And now you're returning the favor. Next I may be asking you some dumb questions!! i bought a trade gun barrel from Rice at the show. Sounds pretty neat ! ...I'd be a bit worried I'd , uhmmm ....how to say it ....not copy intentionally but kinda emulate Bills manual by accident because its how I learned and its so good .@Rob M., a published collection of all your builds just as you show and narrate here would be awesome.
No liner , I externally cone themDo you internally cone your touch holes or even use liners at all?
Thanks bud . ...gettin there ! Can't wait to get it finished and shoot some R.B. through it !Beautiful, Beautiful!!! As always!
