Fixable or not?

Had my uncle pickup what I think is a .45 senaca . Seller broke the nipple off and then used a hand drill to try and get the base out. I really wanted it for the stock but would be nice if I could fix the nipple hole . Will be a month or so before I can get it picked up . What do you guys think? Thanks. FBC

If the threads can be rechased deeply and effectively that can be a shooter again. Sm

Got to be a way to fix that. Hopefully like @sussexmuzllodr said. Or maybe find a nipple with a larger thread base and retap for it? Have it neatly welded, then re-drill and retap?

Drill out the hole cleanly and tap it to create new threads for a new nipple, but you will have to look around for a nipple with larger thread diameter and match that. Maybe a larger musket nipple will work for it, which would give you the benefit of allow you to use musket nipples that are so much easier to find these days.

you can rechase the threads but be confident whether they will hold.

That’s a nasty damage, I wouldn’t trust the repair to anything less the a mill after the breech plug was pulled. Fiddling around by hand is how it got this way.

re breach it. they can be had.
but if trying to repair, mill that mess out thread it and screw in a bolt with red lock tite.
drill out the bolt to the nipple specs and thread it
cut bolt off flush to the flash guard.
drill through the bolt from the "clean out" hole.
chase the nipple hole threads
install new common spec nipple.
powder, patch, ball, shoot

Time for a new breech plug. Could check the Gunworks, just confirm the threads on the aftermarket breechplug match those in the barrel. Replacement Breech Plug - TC - Seneca - 13/16 Dia - The Gun Works Muzzleloading Emporium

I have used Time-Set thread repair in the head of a motorcycle engine for sparkplugs. I don’t know if they would be applicable for use in a BP firearm but it would be something to consider.

They are easy to use and not too expensive.

You could also, as a last resort, find a good TIG welder to fill the hole completely, then drill and tap for a new nipple.

With the damage done to the threads I have to wonder about the condition of the bore.
Track of the Wolf has oversize nipples available. Also various larger thread nipples.

Breech plugs aren't that costly just replace it.

I don't know that much about T/C models and if the breech plugs are interchangeable but I have a brand new T/C plug that you can have if it would fit.

If the threads are damaged to the point you can't recut them Track of the Wolf has oversized taps and nipples in +.05 increments...often I've salvaged them by going .10-.15 oversized.
