Levine, a HBC official, wrote in 1847 to tell men joining HBC to not bother with a rifle, since a patched ball he said shoots as well as a rifle to sixty yards and most game is taken in that range

Realizing Fowler is a shotgun first… what can you expect with round ball in accuracy?
I’m thinking of getting one…. A local gun shop has a nice .62 for sale.

Don’t be afraid to put a really, really low-profile rear sight on the gun when you get it.
It will make you a more consistent shooter.

You can glue a sight on to try it out first, then remove it later if you want.

Here's the national record for smoothbores at the NMLRA. Shot at 50 yards, 13 shots, throw out your worst three. This score a 99 out of 100. Three inch group. Unfortunately, I didn't shoot the target but I did make the gun. .55 cal no rear sight and a simple pull trigger. I do own the gun now.

No grooves anywhere. This record was set back in 1999. Best I personally ever did was a 94.

My Tulley's got a rear sight and I have been pleased. Its a fun shooter
