We're working on a fowler right now. This has been an ongoing project, but is really accelerating. It will be based on original English work from the 1760's or 1770's. It will be a gun intended for export, so from this standpoint it could be called a trade gun, but it won't represent the really low end trade guns we often think of. There was a whole class of English guns built for export that fit this profile. To most, they would look very much like what we think of as an "English Fowler", but there are differences between a high end English gun and these guns made for export.

Barrel breech is usually quite a bit smaller. Ours will be 1.125"
Barrels are often of an earlier 3-stage form. Two round sections and one octagon section.
There typically isn't a tip out or standing breech.
The barrels are typically pinned to the stock rather than using keys
Overall stocking is similar to a higher end English gun, but sometimes a little less refined
Sometimes earlier design forms are used (bulbous formed pipes, sheet metal serpentine sideplates etc.)
Overall level of sophistication and decoration is somewhat lower.

I expect this to be ready in 4-5 months as we are making some pretty rapid progress.

Thanks for all the interest! Any questions, just ask!

Jim

From Australia thanks for that Jim, some of us are looking forward to being able to source one of your Kits, and the FL Fowler fits the bill.

Please let us know when youre ready to accept orders and deposits.

Not offended a bit.

I don’t want to burst your bubble but my reading of his statement is that the Fowler would be based off of guns that were “originally made” to be exported to the states, not that he is making them “exportable” to Australia. His reference to similar to a trade gun has me thinking that. I could be wrong and for your sake hope I am.

I feel vindicated- thanks Jim
As for design and tweaking a new lock, my first Kiblers each had Chambers locks.
My second and third kits had Kibler locks- the SMR a Late Ketland while the Colonial has a larger older style round face.
The Colonial lock came shortly after the Colonial’s rollout- when they were hip-deep in new orders.
Not sure when the Late Ketland came out, but I would imagine before the Colonial launch.
A Smoothbore/ Fowler is next, which is what I heard before the Woodsrunner launch.
Someday a pistol of some sort-
Now I have to get a job to support my habit- thanks Jim!!! :p
Speaking of locks, do ya have a percussion lock in the works to change out from a flint?

From the sound of some of these comments it seems Kibler might be struggling as a business.
Not at all!
I was there a week-a-go on Friday to pick up my cherry stocked .54 cal. Woodsrunner, a Colonial smooth bore barrel and new buttplate, and some Permalyn.
Things were humming. I met Bree, a new employee, Jason and Jim himself. They were all very helpful and informative.
Looks like they are producing as fast as possible to keep up with orders.
I was not able to take home the smooth bore barrel as they were manufacturing them.

I’m still hoping for a good Hawken style kit from Kibler, been saving my pennies since a podcast a couple of years ago.

Thats what its all about isnt it, just squirreling what money we can over time for that dream opportunity in finally getting that special one Gun.

We'll see then.
You may want to contact Jim in regards to this. I seem to remember a previous active member on this forum who had quarrels with his international policy. If I remember correctly, Australia requires barrels to have a traceable serial number on the barrel and this was something Jim couldn’t provide. Things may have changed since then or I may be misquoting, but I’d be safe and contact him directly.
