what is everyones opinion of balistol as an oil & rust preventative. ie, inside and out of barrel, lock, ect. and if you don't like balistol, what do you use :hmm:

Bear Grease

I think a lot has to do where you live and how humid it is. Here I warm up all the metal parts, barrel, lock, furniture if iron and rub on bear grease. Make sure the bottom of the barrel and breech area gets a good dose and put the gun back together. I've only had to do this procedure once per gun. Once the gun is cleaned, I have a thinned mixture that I load up a couple of patches and swab the inside of the barrel with. After that I use an old shaving brush with Bear Oil on it to brush the inside of the lock and the outside of the barrel. Never had a problem with rust.

I use to use GUNK water soluble oil for patch lube. When GUNK stopped making it, I thought I was sunk. A lot of folks in here talked about Ballistol I thought I would give it a go. I couldn't find it in any stores here, so I ordered it online http://www.ballistol.com/index.htm . I got the package A, which has two 16oz. bottles for $22.00, plus $8.00 shipping. A little goes a long ways. I mixed it 4 to 1 with water for patch lube. I took it to the range and shot all day without having to swab the barrel once. Haven't had it long enough to see how it protects against rust. I would give it a big thumbs up  !

I read that brake fluid will get rid of rust and ATF will stop it from comming back tried it on a old scope that had small spots of rust, havent done a long term storage, because I shoot twice a month. will run a patch too see and it comes out red from the atf and b4 shooting I clean with alcohol.

i hot water clean and make sure things are dry with alcohol and then oil every thing with hopp's gun, rem oil or what ever i have on hand....alcohol wipe the bore before loading and good to go :v ................bob

thanks white buff, that's what I was talking about, storing gun . guess I could have worded my original post a little better. I run a dry patch and the follow up with alchohol before heading out to shoot. I know petrol based oil and black powder don't mix, but does any one see a problem with petro based oil in a muzzleloader for storeage?

I use Butch's Bore Shine at the range and again at home to clean my BP firearms. It dissolves BP residue and since it has a drying agent, leaves a small film that protects against rust till I use hot water to flush out the bore from the muzzle out through the nipple threads. I use scalding water, then patch it dry. Then apply oil liberally and pump the oil through the breech and out the nipple using my patchworm and 2 patches soaked in oil. Then store gun muzzle down on a paper towel so oil drains out of nipple, etc.

At the range I run a patch down the bore with my patchworm, then I cap-off to make sure the ignition path is dry and clear. Never a missfire and NO RUST either :) . I use Rem oil in the spray can so I can shoot additional oil down the bore while using the patchworm on the rangerod. Don't have to worry about rust in the hooked breech either! And I don't have to take out the plug to be clean!

Hope this helps, Dave

Haven't bought any store lube since the 80's. Have Bear,Groundhog,Skunk, beef and Deer Tallow. Am using the Deer at present. Have some Stumpy's Moose Milk I made up. All good. Keep in freezer till I need them. Dilly

I use Balistol for metal protection inside and out. I live in a dry climate and it keeps everything rust free.

Another benifit is that the rifles do not crud up as much. I used to use 10 wgt motor oil for protection. After using Balistol for a few months I can now shoot all day without swabbing. Even my Mountain Rifle, which would crud up after five or six shot now can go all day.

I'm certainly no expert here but I use bore butter for short term and there's nothing better than the various gun oils for long term storage - yes, you'll have to wash it out of your bore - no biggy - just like the first time you clean a new bought ml.
