Almost all the shading done, lots of mistakes. Almost 10 hours up to this point. Next comes the stippling, and then the black paint.

What they can't teach you is control. That comes with practice, practice, practice. When stippling, the graver is hard to control, and I get into the cut lines, it makes it look bad.
But I really appreciate the encouragement.

That is a beautiful sideplate. I must admit I was a little skeptical when I saw that large piece of brass before you engraved it.

Best regards
Rolf

Thank you. I have Jerry Huddleston to thank for steering me in this direction.
I wish I could give some of the talent to others...then they could enjoy what I am.

Question:
I am going to do some engraving on the barrel, and am wondering if it should be done before or after the browning??

Well I am not sure what or where you "slipped". However the artist is usuallly his worst critic. My woodcarving instructor can spot boo-boo's in a totally dark room, the worst part is I am also getting that way as well. I think that works out for the better, as we should all use a jaded eye to view our own work. You will soon be hated as you will also spot these "errors"on your friends work as well---it's a product of the time and involvement we put into our artistic pursuits. Anyhow that work looks perfect to me me, yet I am sure a few minutes with a 10X loupe will probably discover these minutiae. Beatiful work---thanks for sharing your experiences. "Doc"

stop selling your self short your work is great and the rifle will make all of us wet our pants when you are done. P.s. can I move in so I can soak up your skill that falls off you. :shocked2:

Can't decide on which buttplate to use. The bottom is the one supplied by TOTW for the marshasll, but I want it to have some engraving on the top. So either I solder a piece on the marshall, or use the "acanthus leaf" butt plate. And I'm not very good at brazing. Any advice?

THis is a horn end I made for the ramrod, the other end is copper and threaded for 8/32 jags and stuff. I want to inlet the channel for the tip, and make a fancy muzzle cap to go around it. THere again, I'm not very good a brazing.

Mike, That acanthus plate is a bear to inlet, but will give you a big blank to fill with engraving. The one below was my first long rifle. I low relief carved and engraved It. I say Go For It!

That's beautiful, Robby!! I hope someday I can do work like that.
The only reason I'm thinking to use the marshall plate is that it is almost all inlet on this pre-inlet, and all I would have to do is braze on an extension, shaped the way I want.
I'm quitting for the day, I had surgery on my forehead to remove some cancer and my eyes are almost swollen shut. DOn't anybody get giddy over this, I'm not gonna die!!

If you think this looks bad then I can not wait till I see perfection in your eyes. That is some beautiful work and I could only wish to have a talent like that.
I know my builds will not have engraving on them unless I pay someone because I could Never do something that awesome. :hatsoff:

Thank you for your kindness. But don't sell yourself short. Maybe you'll try it some day and.....
