I agree in fact every time you fire a cap & ball you detonate the cap under the hammer, or nothing happens at all. This was part of my reasoning behind the test. The cap usually shatters when firing & I've yet to see any injury from the much more forceful firing with a charge & a ball to tamp the force of the blast.

Obviously eye, ear & thumb protection are a good idea if you're going to test a theory like this so I'd never thing of testing without some protection.

I guess them old guys like Sam & Eliaphet had a pretty good handle on what they were doing, given the technology available to them. :bow:
