    Wadding back in the day..?

Tow does make good wadding in fowlers. I have used it before. Be careful though. It almost always comes out smoldering and can start fires in dry woods. Seen it.

    Smoothbore sight-in trouble/solution

I use light powder charges in my guns as well. I shoot 60 gr FFFG in my .50, and 70 gr FFG in my 20 ga fowler. Back down on the powder and find the most accurate group.

    .50 cal for squirrel hunting

Make sure you shoot them in the head. I tried to "bark" a squirrel with my .50 once. I skimmed the tree cutting a nice furrow under him. The bark and lead fragments flew, and the squirrel exploded like a grenade went off under him! Like I said, shoot them in the head.

    Big PRB Meat Ruiner?

I shoot a .50 cal flint rifle with 60 grains of powder. 50 is not a big bore as far as muzzleloaders go, and it's a low velocity. I shoot deer behind the shoulder, and when I peel back the hide I have noticed very little blood shock damage. Pop em in the lungs and there should be very little...

Squirrel killing distance of Cyl. bore?

Your last paragraph says it all. There is no sicker a feeling than to go home at night and wonder how long an animal you wounded suffered before it finally died. Know your gun, know your range and don't rely on a lucky shot. Pass on the bad ones, there will be another day.

    a one squirrel morning

Good shooting. I am about to bust to get into the woods. The SC deer and squirrel seasons are in for private lands but August is too God awful hot to hunt here. There is a sniff of Fall in the air though.

(results!!)Round ball accuracy out of a jug choked smoothbore

I am impressed. I am now rethinking my 20 bore load. I was shooting 70 gr of 2f with a card and am nowhere near that tight a group. I will be at the range tomorrow.

    First Time

As you start developing your powder charge and patched round ball combination, remember that gun will never be a .30-06. You don't need cannon loads of powder. Find the most accurate charge however light it is. I have a .50 cal flint lancaster with a 44" barrel that is deadly with 60 grains of...

    Real World smoothie/roundball accuracy?

I went to the range today with my .50 cal flinter and 20 bore fowler. My fowler is an english style gun with a 40 inch OTR barrel and no rear sight. Shooting from a bench rest I was happy to be able to keep 4 of 5 shots on a paper plate at 50 yards. Thats the best I can do with it but I think it...

    First Time

You are about to be bitten by a serious bug! I hunted for years with a .243 and a .25-06. Only cared about horns and how far I could shoot. I started hunting with black powder and sold them off. When that flint strikes frizzen and you kill your first deer with it you will be hooked for life. I...

    Squirrel Chasers?

As far as hunting enjoyment goes, nothing beats squirrel hunting with BP. I use a flint .40 or 20 bore fowler. Lots more opportuntiy to see game and shoot. The SC season opens early but I like to wait till the first frost to eat them. A squirrel covered with wolves is a nasty sight!

    new rifle

Congrats on the new rifle. All my guns are flint and I clean them the same as Basset does. Plug the flash hole with a tooth pick and wash it out with warm water. You really don't need expensive solvents with black powder, just water and patches.

What do you love to hunt the most?

Hoyt, as God as my witness I am going west someday to hunt elk with the flinter. I have to research where a poor southern cop married to a poor southern school teacher can do a cheaper do it yourself hunt. This year I plan to hunt the South Carolina mountains on a week long hunt/trek in 1770...

Going Off Halfcocked, or How I Got My First BP Tattoo

I did something similar but it didn't leave a permanent reminder. I was bringing the hammer back to full cock when my thumb slipped off allowing the flint to strike the frizzen. The gun fired, burned my hand and scared the HELL out of me. Ole Jezabell is a fine rifle but she demands my full...

    Hunting with a flinter

I have my rifle or fowler primed and ready to go in the field. If you don't, that deer will sneak up from behind you, look, stamp, and snort and you will not be able to prime before he runs off. I change my prime about every hour, sooner if it's damp out. I always shoot out the load at the...

    Faster ignition?

I replaced the removable liner in my rifle with a white lightning liner from TOW. I have noticed that the ignition is faster. I guess this is because of the internal cone of the liner bringing the main charge closer to the pan flash.

How much powder in the pan?

You have to experiment to find what your gun likes. My rifles seem to like about 1/3 of a pan full and make sure the vent is pricked open. I have a fowler that likes a little more. Just make sure the powder doesn't cover the vent, and use a pick to clear into the main charge. You will be...

    Extra looooong rifles, anyone?

I have rifles with 44, 42, and 38 inch barrels. My favorite is the 44" swamped barrel. It's very light and balances better than the others. The funny thing is that at 5'7" I cant look down the barrel while loading. If you are having a rifle built, I would recommed going with a swamped one. You...

    .50 cal roundball load

I shoot a .50 cal flint lancaster with a 44" barrel. My load is 65gr of 3f goex, linen patch, and a .490 ball. It kills targets and deer. I have only shot deer at around 50 yards, and it usually knocks them flat. What do you .50 cal shooters load with?

    .44 cal killing power

I use the pine 2x4 test for round balls too. I can punch a .40 cal ball through a 2x4 at 60 yards. My 50 can do it farther. I dont care about paper ballistics. You are throwing a hunk of lead almost a half inch in diameter. If you can punch a .433 ball through both lungs you have cube steaks...
