    DP Kentucky Range day

Both of my Pedersolis had occasional misfires until I slightly enlarged the holes in the nipples with a small drill on a Dremel tool. Now I never have misfires and can use any grade powder. I was told later that Pedersoli nipples have very small openings. I believe the Kentucky model is not...

    GPR opinion on buying

I have a GPR .50 that I upgraded with a Green Mountain barrel. What brand of lock did you use for a replacement and where did you get it? Thanks.

What is best Hawken type today?

Got the Dixie Christmas flyer the other day and saw that the Rocky Mt Hawken in walnut is on sale for around a thousand dollars. Maple is more. This is one beautiful rifle.

New Lyman .54cal possible crown issue...

I agree. Lyman barrels, at least the one on my GPR .50 had flaws that made it a bad shooter and couldn't be fixed. I bought a new Green River barrel from Pecatonica and now it shoots well and has become one of my favorites. I know everyone doesn't have these problems, but more and more seem...

Starting charge for these new conicals

I own two Pedersoli muzzle loaders and both misfired more than my other guns. I was shooting Triple 7 in those days. On the advice of a friend I made the hole in the nipple slightly larger with a small drill on my Dremel tool and have had no problems since. Pedersoli nipples are notorious for...

not firing 1st time after cleaning

The patent breech (the devil's own invention) may need a good cleaning as discussed above. I remove the nipple, then use a bent pipe cleaner to get up into the patent breech, after cleaning with a tight patch in a bucket of water, followed by a blast of air from a compressor. Test by shooting...

    changing nipple size

    Best idea yet!

    Hawken snail question?

Wow! I have an Ohio rifle and the breech is exactly like your picture. I never noticed that extra metal on the top. Thanks for that bit of knowledge.

    Lyman GPR "cleanout plug" question

I find that it is much easier to clean the patent breech with a pipe cleaner through the cleanout screw hole. And as above I replace it after the nipple with a bit of anti seize grease and am careful to not over tighten. I always thought that it was there for that reason.

    Another Hawken Question

I returned two of the Pedersoli Hawkens to Cabela's after realizing that there was chatter marks in both of the barrels left by the broaching tool. The rifling was permanently screwed up so I returned them and Cabela's agreed. Both were absolutely beautiful guns with lots of hand work. I have...

    Another Hawken Question

Depending how much you want to spend or how much work you want to do, take a look at the Lyman Great Plains rifle in kit form, or finished. This rifle is a close copy of a Hawken and shoots well. Pedersoli Hawken is expensive and you have to examine the barrel closely for defects. They are...

Using 3F or 4F black powder

What you said is absolutely right. Maybe it was a typo.

    Ordered a rifle.

Be sure to clean then check the barrel carefully. My kit had some burrs and other minor flaws within the first 6 inches of the muzzle. I've been able to correct most of those problems, but I shouldn't have had to. It is a beautiful gun and about as close to a genuine Hawken as you can get...

    Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken

You could see the chattermarks just inside the muzzle extending down to an inch or more inside the muzzle made from the broaching tool. Cabelas agreed with me when they looked at it. I have broken in rifles before, but these were both defective.

    Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken

Good luck on the Pedersoli Rocky Mt Hawken. I bought the first one at Cabelas and after shooting it discovered a defective barrel. The gun would not group and it shredded patches, regardless of the thickness or load. It went back and was replaced. Same problems. Thanks to Cabelas for the...
