Best Deal On Muzzloaders Starter Kits

The best is to decide what you need and get just the items you want, seems most starter "kits" have a lot of junk you end up throwing away anyway. Sooner or later (most likley much sooner) you will change most of it anyway. Minimum seems like: 1) cleaning jag 2) powder measure, adjustable 3)...

    MuzzleBlasts Postal match

This is, in my experience of about thirty years shooting flinters, an old wives tale. I've wiped the frizzen and flint with my finger to get the mud off and have never had a problem with ignition. I may be wrong, but I don't think Dan'l Boone, Simon Kenton, the Girty boys or anyone else in the...

Traditions revolver vs Uberti or Pietta?

My experience is exaclty the opposite of Pasquenel I bought two Pietta percussion revolvers from Cabela's and have been using them for Cowboy Action Shooting with no problems. On the other hand one of two Uberti revolvers I bought broke the hand spring before I could even get to the range and...

safety carrying a Cap and Ball gun

Please do not do this! Resting the hammer on the cap is an accidental discharge just waiting to happen, and sooner or later it will happen, just hope the muzzle is not pointing at something you don't want shot when it chooses to go off. The safest way to carry is to carry un-capped, of course...

    Smoothies by Dave Motto?

Yep!! About twenty years ago I had the chance to buy a 12 Gauge double flintlock he built. My wife said to do it but I felt I couldn't afford it at the time. Boy was that a STUPID decision. Wish I could get it now.

    bees wax

The last time I looked at wax in the craft stores it ran about ten bucks per pound plus tax. I just bought ten pounds from a vendor on eBay shipped for four bucks per pound. For me this one is a no brainer.

    Minie Ball Lube suggestions ...

Most anything will work, long long ago I "borrowed" my mom's "Crisco" and used that. I've been using a mix of about half 'N' half bee's wax and Ballistol, you can substitute olive oil or neatsfoot oil for the Ballistol. Vary the ratio of wax to oil to get the constincy you want.

    Swiss 1.5 ff or 2ff

Mooshkat I think I would get the 2F, the 1.5F seems to most popular in the big bore cartridge loads. I actually use 3F for my .36 Navies and a .40 cal flint rifle.

    Wiping revolver barrel between shots

NO NO NO Do not EVER place any part of your body you don't want a hole shot in, in front of a loaded revolover. Seriously if your revolver is fowling so badly you need to clean between each shot you need more lube. I've been shooting Cowboy Action with a brace of 1851 Navy's and only clean at...

    Custom Flinter Questions

You need to check out TVM. You can get a nice semi custom rifle for under $1000. Or if you can get a little more into the budget they make a nicely engraved and carved rifle for about $1500. http://www.avsia.com/tvm/grand.htm

First shot from a clean 1861 barrel, goodbye 777..

I concur, I have not tried 777 and as long as I can get the real deal have no use for it. I will continue to shoot GOEX in my cowboy cartridge guns and Swiss in my flinters.

    Uberti 1851 revolver questions

Dave, The best place for parts I've found is VTI replica gun parts. http://www.vtigunparts.com They sell parts for Uberti, Pietta and Pedersoli. I bought extra springs, hands and other small parts for my 1851's when I started shooting them in CAS mstches. Of course thanks to Murphy's law...

    casting round balls

The previous posts are pretty complete, just one thought, if you don't have a heat source ie coleman stove or the like, you can get a LEE electric bottom pour pot for close to the same money as a stove and pot. also check eBay casting stuff comes up there a lot. Just some thoughts for you to...

    What to do after cleaning?

Well for the last fifteen or so years I've just used a good lube. (the old 103 lube, bore butter etc) The thing is make sure the metal is DRY then put enough lube on it to prevent contacy with the air. I always double check the gun in two or three days just to make sure. Like I said I've been...

    40 cal. Load suggestions?

Brad, Typically a good starting load is about one grain per caliber, ie 40 grains in a 40 cal. Mine likes .395 round balls .015 ox yoke lubed patches, (too lazy to mess around experimenting) and 40 grains of FFFg Swiss. I've found with this rifle I need about 50 grain of Goex to get the same...

    1861 PIETTA or UBERTI?

MontanaDan, I bought a brace of Pietta '51 Navies from Cabela's this spring and shot them in CAS matches all summer. They work great. I bought the "Wild Bill" models with the fake ivory grips and some extra engraving but otherwise standard production.

    Triple 7 powder VS goex

WOW, here we go again, I just don't get the fascination with the various subs! About the only reason that may hold up is real black powder may be a little hard to get and store in some locations. However that being said you can order as little as 5 pounds of powder from this place...
