    Know what this is?

It's a Confederate Officer's Tempura Pot!!! The scallops are to keep the tempura skewers in place. A "Lackey" would be called in to set the fire and pour in the oil (usually from possum renderings) and the Officers would place pieces of salt pork, boiled mule (cubed), or turnips onto a skewer...

What would you like to see?

I've never seen the foxfire series... do you mean making a series of the foxfire books? Agreed... Underhill would do a bang-up job of it. Team him up with David Holt. Holt did the two series: "fire on the mountain" and "folkways" for Turner many years ago!!! Jim aka kiltiemon

    hot buttered rum

The mulling iron is correct! By heating the iron and dipping it into the rum mix, the hot iron not only heats the drink but carmelizes the molassess/sugars that are touching the hot iron as it goes in. This imparts a really great flavor to the drink. Had it that way at Fort King George last...

    packing eggs

IIRC Thor Hyerdahl kept fresh eggs on the RA II voyage in lime and straw. This was the way they were kept during the egyptian period and they lasted several weeks if not months! Haven't tried it, myself. :shocked2: Jim aka kiltiemon

    Mildew Smell In Tent!!!

I've tried the search function but got no results... Just picked up a used 8x10 Panther wall tent. It's been stored and has a musty smell that may (most likely does) indicate mold growing on it. If I still had a house with a pool, I'd just soak it there for a few hours, hang it up to dry...

what exactly was a brittish walgun for?

recycle... The Queen Anne's Revenge (A public house in Charles Town, Colony of South Carolina) has several of them on display amoung the myriad of artifacts which accent the decor. Can't remember how the food was, we were too tired and too enthralled with all the Pirate and AWI guns, weapons...

    Outdoors Retail Store Degradation

Mule... there used to be a BP shop up in West Palm Beach alongside the railroad tracks (Maybe it was Rivera Beach). Can't remember the name of it. Jim aka kiltiemon (yes, I've blown smoke at Markham Park!)

    I like Kentucky people,,

I'd love to live in Kentucky. Some ancestors (on both sides) came from there. Came close to buying land in Eastern Kentucky but didn't (My bad). With the economy as it is and fuel (E. Ky has about three miles of road for every mile of straight line travel) I'm concerned about quitting a...

What is a good PC tea?

IIRC, sassafrass was a major export in the early days of the English colonies. "Teas" were made from barks, leaves, flowers, and roots of a variety of plants (and for a variety of purposes, as well). Jim aka kiltiemon

    Camden 225th

I'm looking forward to it, CrackStock!!! Certainly should be a change from the sub 30' weather we usually get Sat. night! I've seen ice on the tents till 11 am and actually had a bit of snow fall once. Quite a bit of difference between Mid August and Early November! Look up the Lt Col's...

    Last Of The Mohicans (1936)

I've enjoyed it! Should be part of anyone's collection. Jim aka kiltiemon

    sassafrass

I believe it's the root... ergo: "Root Beer". Major export in the early days of the colonies, at one time IIRC it was the #1 export in dollar value!!! Jim aka kiltiemon

    re-enacting

Well Sir... If it's eight SCOTs they are, it's all that's needed!!! :: Our's is a hobby that requires (Demands) a lot of work to get a presentation reasonably accurate (and I mean not just in appearance and execution, but in our personal mind-set as well). Some people just don't want to apply...

What is the history of this tomahawk?

Then again, it may have been worked, shaped, smoothed and just not had the groves cut into it yet. At that point it was lost to the owner through some occurance and never completed. Jim aka kiltiemon

Outer Banks Indian Object. What is it?

Was just thinking... If you found it on the surf line, it could have been degraded by erosion since it was manufactured. So... what you see now may not be entirely what the original product looked like. Very interesting!!! Jim aka kiltiemon

Outer Banks Indian Object. What is it?

Can't you just scan it in the scanner, send it that way? I have never done it myself, but I can barely turn on the laptop so it shouldn't stop you! I think scanning the object would work. We're all dyin' here trying to figure out what this thing could be!!! Jim aka kiltiemon

    primitive artifact show

Found one in North Georgia, Union County, Lake Nottley on the shoreline of Davenport Mountain, in about six inches of water. I was lamenting to my then wife that her sister's boyfriend could find an arrowhead but I couldn't find a thing. Looked down and saw what looked to be the milky colored...
