I'm not an admirer of carvings etc. , I find it gaudy and in the case of say mortice carvings I dont like how they feel when shooting the gun however .... the tang carving isn't too bad , doesnt get in the way , if incised carved not raised , and is authentic do I added it ...reluctantly . So here it is ... Center line , stop lines then draw in design . chisel straight down , not terribly deep then remove dead wood with chisel going sideways . If you have sharp chisels , I do not , there is not much sanding needed . You can see the special file I modified for such work , works pretty well ,then use sand paper , 80 grit , to clean up . Do the straight lines first then the end of beaver tail and sides , youll gain confidence that way , then do the parts that swoop in .... Stay off those edges , I use finger nails as stops . Sand with grain !

Gotta get er done , at least just the wood done all covered, protected with shellac ...gotta make meat with er soon ...

And sanding ....after getting fat bulges out of elongated wrist then use course sand paper and block to try and roll that wrist so it doesnt turn out flat ....and sand and sand and sand and sand and sand .....

Ok .... She is to final form ....GEESH !! Now I have to sand for smoothness and take out scratches etc. before slappin on shellac . The tab on the B.P. is bad , too low , if it were a customers gun I'd have to take the plate off and fix it ...I'll cringe every time I look at the tab but ....I'm not rippin off the B.P. , no way . It'll still kill deer either way . Ok then ....back to sanding .....blah ..... :/

Building ME a N.W. Trade gun !! LOL ! Yet again !! Hope I keep this one ! I love that one I made for myself , the last one but ... Goofy me ....that lock made me mad and ....in seriousness , I do need to pack one around and be able to hand it to someone and be able to say " This is an example of what i make ..." all the components being the same SO .....here I go again :) . Pic of my last N.W. gun side plate . Just love it !
Nice mellow-looking finish, very handsome! I got my Gostomsky gun once I got hooked on the serpent sideplate~! And, the history of these!

Yeah , I love the history of them. I read a bunch of TM Hamilton then I made my first NW gun ....then I was hooked !

How durable do you find your shellac finish?
Pretty tough but not that tough shiny tough that I do not like on guns . Ive tried oil ( the worst but was emulating Ken Netting , my building hero ) , varnish and now this shellac . I like the shellac ....funny , a guy from a couple hundred years ago suggested it so I tried it . In the HBCo archives a guy tells the gun builders to use shellac ....so I did ....I like it .
