Harvesting and Seasoning your own wood

I've gone through the process before and it can be pretty fun. If you’ve gone through all the sweat to create boards from a section of tree trunk, then it isn’t that much more work to flatten it with a hand plane. In fact, that’s child’s play compared to the lumberjack work. I’ve used...

Harvesting and Seasoning your own wood

This is indeed a very broad subject. I'd recommend a book called "Understanding Wood" by Bruce Hoadley. It's been in print for a long time so your local public library is likely to have it (or access to it). It is very informative about how you get from a tree to useable lumber.

BP gets bump due to modern ammo$$?

Wait...Bass Pro has black powder? I asked one time recently and was told that the Pyrodex out on the shelf was all they had. Of course, it's possible the kid behind the counter didn't know what he was talking about. Do I need to ask one of the old guys if they have it stowed behind the...

    First Scratchings!

I like it. Not silly at all. Dumb question: where do you get a horn?

Just made this turnscrew for my lock..

That's nice; inspiring even. Makes me want to try it myself.

    Loading Stand

I made a quick loading stand. Clear pine from Lowes - nothing fancy. No finish either. Yet.

What got you started in this hobby/sport?

Hey Loyalist_Dave, I feel the same way about muzzleloader folks. When I went to a club shoot last summer, they treated me like a distinguished guest too and, as you say, let me shoot their custom flintlocks. Good people. That was The Osage Territory Muzzleloaders.

BP gets bump due to modern ammo$$?

Here in the Tulsa area, I've been to two ranges. The indoor range will not allow me to bring in my black powder guns - no reason given. The other is a nice outdoor range but nobody in the office had ever seen a traditional gun like mine. There is a very nice club nearby where they do some...

    Shooting without wiping

This is pretty interesting to read. I went to the range Friday (5/9/14) and didn’t wipe enough; I ended up with a ball stuck so tight I thought I’d never get it out or down the rest of the way. The ball puller just pulled right out of the ball. I had to take it home and ram it down with a...

    Shooting and cataracts

I had early onset cataracts at age 52 (lucky me) and I first noticed foggy glare around lights at night (like oncoming headlights, etc) or light fixtures inside. I had the surgery and I'm pretty much fixed. I use the cheap readers to make the computer screen easier to see but I can pass the...

    A Box for my Revolver

Thanks. That foam is called Kaizen foam sold by FastCap.com. You cut the outline with a utility knife and peel the cavity out with your fingers. Kaizen foam is made up of many layers about 1/8" thick and they separate pretty easily.

    Dragoon Revolver Case

That's lovely. Nice tight miters. I was afraid to use miters on the box I built because I wondered if they'd be strong enough but clearly that's not an issue. What species of wood is it?

    A Box for my Revolver

I made a quick box for my Pietta Remington reproduction. See it on flickr Do not look too closely at those dovetails; they're a bit sloppy but they hold everything together. That is toolbox foam that I hollowed out for the pistol. I plan for this to fit into a larger range box that is yet...

Box joints, back in the day

I watched a woodworking demo at Silver Dollar City near Branson, MO where a guy was showing a special purpose machine driven by a belt from a central shaft in the ceiling. It cut multiple dovetails simultaneously and presumably, there could have been a similar machine for doing box joints...

    Scrub planes

I've read that flea markets are good places to shop for such things out on the east coast. I've not found that to be the case in the central US (Oklahoma) where I live. I've bought old tools online though with good results. I've bought from Patrick Leach (supertool.com) and Joshua Clark...

    Scrub planes

I've done this before and it's a pretty good upper body workout even if you're technique is good and your plane iron is sharp. There is a good video on how to do this produced by Popular Woodworking magazine and presented by Christopher Schwarz. I followed his example and was successful but...

    #11 magnum caps: Winchester?

I have a tin of CCI #11s and a tin of Winchester #11s and they are clearly different sizes. The CCIs barely fit on my rifle but they work really well on my revolver (which says it needs #10). It makes me wonder what will happen when I open the next tin.
