    Maxi question

Same here. I have found that a felt wad or "bore button" between the powder charge and the Maxie will improve accuracy. Bob

    CVA Concerns

I have a CVA Mountain Stalker in .50. It is a good shooter and I have absolutely no concerns in shooting it. My experiences are identical to what Buford posted. The trigger is on the heavy side but it is a field rifle not a target rifle for me. I have probably read the article(s) you are...

    50 cal hunting load questions

I have no experience with elk but a felt button between the powder charge and the maxiball or conical bullet will often shrink your groups considerably. Bob

    First time black powder user

In Massachusetts a permit is required to purchase and posess Caps, BP, and the projectiles as they are considered ammunition. Hell, even the possession of the blank casings from the 21 gun salute of a military funeral are technically illegal to posess without a permit; and yes people have been...

    reducing first shot wander

Another way to look at it is: How can I make the rest of my shots the same as the first shot? This is what works for me: I snap two caps before I load the first shot and I wipe the barrel with a spit patch in between each shot and all my shots group together. Whether it is the first shot or...

    Rescued T/CHawkin .50

Massachusetts was a smooth bore only state for muzzleloaders a long was back. My brother has a TC.54 smooth bore. Bob

    Bullet question

This thread has been an interesting read for a relative newbie like myself. My thanks to all the contributors. Bob

    Bullet question

What Capper said. A .50 PRB weighs in at around 176g yet the TC Maxi Ball I shoot is 370g. There is a significant difference in felt recoil getting that Maxi moving down the pipe. I use the same amount of powder for my PRB and TC Maxi ball and they shoot equally well. The PRB's shoot higher as...

    Range Report and Advice Needed

I have a CVA in .50. The only two times I ever had ignition problems were when I was shooting 777 and when I was using the factory nipple. I bet if you change nipples to something like a Spitfire (thats what I use) your misfires will go away. I have never had a misfire using Goex ff and the...

    Need ball and patch size

If it is possible I would start by asking the previous owner what load the rifle liked and tinker with it from there if needed. No sense in re-inventing the wheel if you don't need to. Bob

    Lyman GPH wads

I also get better accuracy out of my CVA .50 with a felt wad (button) between the powder charge and a Maxi ball. But, for what I do a PRB is just as accurate and is more than enough to put down a deer. Bob

    connecticut valley arms

I have a CVA Mountain Stalker in .50. It is a good shooter and great for hunting. It was inexpensive so if it gets rained on or gets a few dings it doesn't bother me. It is a hunting rifle that gets used and probably a little abused but it gets the job done. Bob

    Cabelas/Williams Firesight Fit?

They have one that fits the "Cabela's Octagon Hawkins" listed on their web page. I put one on my CVA as I needed it to see the sights these as my eyes are not what they used to be these days and it works fine for me. I figured that my CVA really wasn't a "traditional" muzzleloader so it really...

    renegade twist ?

I shoot a TC Maxi ball out of my CVA which has a 1:48 twist using an over powder wad. It will shoot clover leafs out to 50 yards. It shoots PRB just as well. Bob

    what is this? I'm guessing

I bet that it would make a great arrow puller as well. Bob

    Safety Catch?

I personally know someone that was carrying his caplock at half cock with the cap on the nipple and he was walking holding the rifle with one hand in the middle of the rifle. As he was walking he let the rifle swing and the hammer caught the cargo pocket on his pants and the rifle discharged. He...

    CVA Mountain Stalker

I had my best accuracy with the TC Maxi balls when I used an over powder wad. I was shooting the 370g ; which I was using for a black bear load. A stout load for sure and definitely overkill for deer. Bob

    CVA Mountain Stalker

I have the same gun and it is a 1:48 twist. Mine shoots both the round balls and the TC Maxi balls very well. My round ball load is 85g FFg Goex, .020 pre-lubed patch, and a .490 Hornady PRB. Bob

    Traditions Woodsman .50

This and get the dovetail punch at TOW if you don't have one. It is short money and worth every penny. Some dovetailed sights are tapered and only come out one way. IIRC tap it out to the right side as looking down the barrel. Bob
