Would that really ruin a rifle?

Tower I read 'ruined' as being sufficiently water damaged to be unusable until dried out and repaired. Whether it was eventually put back into battery is unknown but it was apparently ruined for him as he replaced it two days later.

    Percussion to Flinter

Yes, it is possible and can be rather simple. Do you have a specific rifle in mind?

    Native American preference for rifles?

I'm under an opinion completely unsupported by any scholarly references that Indians tended to shorten the barrels of their firearms both to make the gun more practical in use and recycle the recovered metal into other tools or weapons.

    Percussion Rifles Beginning?

On display in the Alamo is an original rifle that was owned by David Crockett. It is a half stock percussion gun presented to him while serving in Congress and it's date of manufacture was somewhere between 1826-1830 if my information is correct. Certainly before his departure from Congress in...

    Crockett's rifle

Forgot, spent some time squinting at the muzzle to determine the caliber and guessed about .50.

    Crockett's rifle

Thanks for the pictures. I had the same chance to view and photograph this rifle about twelve years ago when it was on display in a museum in Austin as a part of a traveling exhibit on David Crockett. This is the rifle used by young David to establish himself as a hunter and would have been...

I need to know about preshipping powder and possibles

You can, I've done it, and found it a better idea to get the powder at the destination.

    I did a booboo!!!

A short start or some other obstacle, wad perhaps, located at that spot in the barrel. Doesn't seem like something as light as a wad would do it but even an over powder paper disc can bulge a barrel if there is an air space between the disc and the powder.

pedersoli Bess in the paws of a newbie.

Hey Priest, It seems you have or have listed all you will need to fire the gun. A shooting stick is not necessary but couldn't hurt. Basically what you've got is a flintlock shotgun. Recoil doesn't need to be even close to a 3 1/2 " goose load, 50 grains weighed out on your digital scale...

    fore end or nose cap

Thanks Stump that's why I posed the question. I figured there was some practical reason the stock terminated in a metal cap but why the practice started wasn't apparent to me. Regards, Squire

Can you help identify this rifle?

Good morning, A fellow named Frank Garrett owned the company that commissioned this and other rifle models to be reproduced in Italy and imported here. I believe the brand was 'Palmetto' or that may have been a name connected to the manufacturer. Eventually rising production costs put him out...
